Even if you are on pension like a lot of of my students, you can use solely narrow time and energy for your sketching hobby. And if you're creating art professionally then hours and energy will be almost more constricted and valuable to you!

So you might be asking yourself: what could I focus on when drawing? You could work on rising your strengthsor you could put time in eliminating your weaknesses.

Rather a tricky question. It is crucial to spend some thoughts on the question into what to invest your time.

On the one hand you should concentrate on your best skills. Let us say for example that you're outstanding in drawing smooth and realistic looking shadings. So you could put a lot of your efforts into further improving these skills. Some more energy will take your skill-level from "great" to "uber-great".

On the other hand you could put your efforts into eliminating your weaknesses. Let us assume you need a lot of additional practice in drawing perspective and proportions more precisely. Investing some effort you would move your skill in this area to at least medium levels.

But wait! If you focus alone on fighting your shortcomings, you'll commit a lot of time to change these weaknesses into only average skills. In the end that implies you may end up with virtually only intermediate skills, the outcome is only mediocrity.

You read there are both vantages and disfavors to both options be it building upon your abilities or be it compensating your weaknesses.

Numerous artists may convince you: ignore your weaknesses and concentrate on your top abilities. That's a great advice but as you'll understand only one-half of the truth.

So what to do?

Foremost it is important you recognize your shortcomings and you have to know how much your weaknesses affect your drawings. An example: When drawing a lot of pencil sketches, mediocre proficiency in proportions and perspective drawing will handicap you a big deal more than missing experience in the coloring. As a matter of fact these skills are absolutely worthless as long as you stay with sketching black-and-white pencil sketchings.

And that's the crucial thing: only brush aside these weaknesses that do not handicap your projects and artwork. But put a good share of your efforts into those weaknesses that keep you from achieving better results and sketches. Work on neutralizing these weaknesses - and exclusively these!

And so you will have a lot of energy left to try bettering your strengths even further. And that's what you ought to do, also. If you follow this strategy you'll acquire the best outcomes possible for your time and energy.

One last addition: these advices may read a little like those efficiency stuff taught in management courses. And yes it is very similar. But it is not aiming for squeezing the last drip of creative thinking out of your time! It is only for doing the right things to help you develop your drawing abilities most.

And of course please do not ignore the amusing part of drawing. So if you like to essay new techniques because it is fun then just do it! (and do not think about whether it will help you or not ...)
