How To Give A

If you're like me, then at some stage in your life, you may have had to sit through a really boring power point presentation, and struggled to stay conscious! Have you ever given one before, or are about to? So to prevent this, and in that way possibly having your services terminated, you need to give yourself the best possible chance, to keep your manager and workmates happy, and your target audience awake! . If you are of that inclination, then keep these tips to yourself: that way you are able to stay in front of your co-workers, and secure that promotion in front of them! Or, pass on these tips; whatever you want.

The worst gaffe you can make is to think that cool graphics are going to make up for the fact that you can’t give a good quality presentation if your life depended on it. Well, not your life, maybe, but at "best" you'll look like a total incompetent, and at worst, you'll only get "only" fired. Thereby no pressure.

In that way, if you do apply these tips to develop your presentation skills, make sure you use them properly. There is nothing worse than someone who thinks they understand what they are doing, and in this manner look all the worse because of it.

Right, here they are then.

1. Before you begin your presentation, make sure that you are standing on the left side of the screen. The problem for this is since humans, Western humans anyway, are trained to read from left to right, this means your audience must look to you first, on their left, look to the screen on their right. So if you guide their attention using appropriate hand gestures to the screen on your right. Thus their eyes are more easily moving from left to right, so they are able to read the text in comfort. And then they return to you, on their left, etc. If you were to stand on their right side, then you will have their heads going back and forth like they were watching a tennis match. This will just make them restless, since they're not doing what is natural to them, in this manner you would rather have your viewers concentrating on what you're telling them, and you're presentation, rather then thinking about how uncomfortable they are.

2. It's your show, so be as noticeable as possible. You don't want to be some far-off silhouette. Make use of a hip laser pointer or wireless mouse. Audiences love that techno stuff!

3. Make Certain you turn off the screen savers on you're laptop. You don't want to look like a total Goose by thinking your audience are viewing your presentation, when all they are able to understand is your favorite screen saver. Oops! Poorer still is when you forget you're Laptops power properties, having your Notebook Hibernate after a pre-set time period. BIGGER oops!

4. Learn how to utilize the function key that controls both screens; your Notebooks screen, and the projector screen. This is as a rule "F8" on nearly all PC's. Understanding where, and how to operate this Function key is, will smooth transitions and whatnot out, and make you look really clever to boot, as in, "looks-like-he/she-knows-what-they-are-doing" kind of clever. Impresses them no end! When you do toggle the Function key, make sure it has worked before moving on. You want both on in that way you are able to look at the pc' as the viewers watches the same image behind you on the screen. Sometimes take a quick look toward the screen, just to check. But put your laptop between you and the viewers, thereby you can look at your viewers since you are speaking.

5. Since colors can seem differently on the projector, than on the notebook where you designed it, the correct color is important, (perhaps for a company logo), test and adjust the color ahead of the presentation.

6. Keep it simple using the colors and other special effects. Don't use any more than six colors per slide. This will avoid your viewers from being distracted by all the pretty colors you were so proud of, while making sure you're audience is receiving your message. In other words, don't blind them, and bore them, with science.

7. Sudden motions attracts their eyes. Just think of a cat. Try gesturing toward the screen when you want them to look there. Utilize moving text to catch their notice. Stand still when you want them to look to the screen. Then move when you want to capture their attention again. This will wake them up. Kidding. ;P

8. Be sure you're audience are able to understand you're slides by standing six feet away from the monitor. If you can read the monitor then your audience will probably be able to read the screen. If they can comfortably observe and read your screen, then all you did was toward incense them, and your presentation was a waste of their time. Not good.

9. Turn up early and check everything. Yeah, It's a bit of a "duh" line, but, if you take the time to be successful, then you WILL be! You ONLY get out what you put in. The End.

10. This guy Murphy loves equipment. Thereby keep him away by Being Prepared. For example, come prepared with backup files, an extra power source for the notebook and projector, and additional batteries for your remote mouse. It only takes one unforeseen episode to destroy all your hours, occasionally days, of hard slog. Be also all set to offer your presentation with no gear. Bring a folding whiteboard, for example.

Extra TIP: Your audience are going to be impressed by YOU, NOT you're hardware. You will ALWAYS be promoting yourself - don't rely on your machinery!
