If you're anything like most people, then you've probably gone through a pretty bad relationship at some time that messed you up for quite a while. This is most common in the case of most first relationships, but, in many relationships, people often make the mistake of dwelling on the past to the extent that it gets in the way of their dating future. That's not a good idea at all! Here are three excellent tips that will insure you get over a relationship quickly.

1. - Stop thinking of only about the good times.

A mistake that often seen after a break up is to keep thinking of the good times they shared with their ex, which makes them miss the ex even more than ever . This mistake will cause you to get hopelessly stuck -- you can't move on if you keep thinking only of the past.

Instead of thinking of those things that make you miss your ex, try to focus on the reasons why the relationship didn't work out. Was he or she unfaithful to you? Abusive? Or perhaps simply unavailable? Whatever caused the breakup, you will need to accept the fact that there's nothing you can do to change the past. And when you make this mental shift, you'll be far more open to the possibilities of the future.

2. - Stop giving too much of yourself in your relationships.

It's true that most people tend to give it their all to make a relationship work. However this can make a breakup all the more devastating, depending on how much of your emotional health you've invested into making it work.

While it's always good to try to invest into making the relationship work, it's a bad idea to do so when the relationship is already over! If you are still trying to find ways to be close with him / her or see him / her every now and then, you'll only end up feeling even worse in the long run.

Instead it's best to treat your dating partners as a sort of "medium priority" instead of making them the center of your life. Be sure you still have your career, family responsibilities, social life, and your own share of "my time" in place. That way when a break up happens, you still have the other aspects of your life to help you get through it.

3. - Keep open to new opportunities, no matter how hard it may seem at this difficult time.

Don't make the mistake so many do and try to avoid meeting new potential partners after a particularly bad breakup. You may, initially, think you'll be better off without a relationship, if relationships are going to cause you pain. But this fallacy will only make you more and more miserable over time.

The truth is that there are very few things in life can ever match up to the magic of meeting and falling in love with an amazing, that very special, gal or guy. So stay hopeful and keep making a point of meeting new people -- you will never know who will be waiting for you, just out of sight.
