If you're extremely tense then you are limiting your internal airways, so it is important that you breath in slow, out even slower, but above all ensure that the body, particularly the torso, is as relaxed as possible.

A bout of anxiousness is not a panic attack and the way to stop a panic is to learn to breath correctly while you are in the moment of anxiousness. This will likely avoid the attack and ultimately the anxiety should subside. Once you've successfully handled this several times you should be over the worst and your anticipations of them will fade as you learn to embrace rather than fear them. Panic and anxiety can both be stopped permanently but it depends on you!
