There are some steps that a person can take to find out the bmi that they have. You will need to find a scale, pen and paper, yardstick or measuring tape and a calculator in order to do this. First you need to weight yourself on the scale and write the weight down on the paper.

Next you will need to measure how tall you are in inches. write this number down on the paper. Remember that the number you need is in inches, so if you are 5 feet tall than that would be 60 inches.

The next step is to divide your weight by the number that you just came up with from your height squared. Next you need to multiply this by the number 703, which will give you the number that represents your bmi.

There is a scale that is used to measure where your results stand. If the number is less than 18 then your bmi means you are underweight, if it is under 18.5 you are thin for your height. if the number is between 18.6 and 24.9 you are sitting at a healthy weight for your height. A bmi of 25-29.9 means that you are overweight, and 30 or over means that you are obese and you should be seeing a physician or going on a weight loss plan before something dire happens to you.

Using the bmi can give a person a very good idea where they stand in regards to their weight. Always keep in mind though that muscle weighs more than fat and people that tend to have a lot of muscle may come up with a result that does not seem to fit them appropriately.

Remember that a high bmi can be a sign that you are at a high risk for certain conditions that those that have a low bmi are less likely to have afflict them. Heart disease is a high risk factor for those that have the high bmi scores. Trying to get your bmi down to a healthier level is something that would be advised by all doctors around. Try adding some more exercise to your daily activities and reduce your calorie intake and you will be surprised to see how better you will feel, not to mention that you will see the bmi lower as well.
