French food makes a great gift, and with Christmas just round the corner, a gift of gourmet food or French food ingredients could be ideal. But if you're not familiar with French food, or when it comes to gourmet food, you can't tell the difference between a duck confit and goose foie gras, then how do you decide upon the most suitable French gourmet food gifts for someone you know?

Gourmet food is considered to be those meals, delicacies or dishes which use only the finest ingredients and methods of preparation. For anyone who enjoys good food, gourmet food is the ultimate dining experience. It's like taking a break from your 8 year old family car and taking a spin round Silverstone in a Ferrari. Just for a while, your taste buds are treated to a mouth-watering experience.

It's important for all of us to have such an experience from time to time. Unless we experience gourmet food occasionally, it's easy to desensitise our palettes and taste buds to the relative blandness of supermarket fayre. Although such food may be perfectly good for everyday use, there are always occasions when something a little different is called for, and Christmas is just such an occasion.

Perhaps we don't bother with French food and gourmet ingredients normally because it's considered a luxury. That is certainly true, but just because something is a luxury doesn't mean it's forbidden. The past year has been pretty miserable for many of us, and with belts tightened and budgets slashed, the idea of placing top of the range French food or gourmet food on the table has been about as realistic as driving to the supermarket in a Ferrari.

But Christmas is a time to celebrate, and a time for luxuries, a little extravagance, and generosity. It's a time to stop feeling glum about the year that's drawing to a close, and to remember that life's for enjoying, and a little luxury goes a long way to helping remind everyone that life isn't all about surviving the next financial quarter.

So if you've started thinking about giving someone you know a gift of French food, or perhaps a gourmet food ingredient, then what should you choose? There are a tremendous number of choices, and if you've had a few ideas, you may well have discovered that once you start investigating the choices are even more diverse than you might have imagined.

This doesn't always make the decision making process very much easier, and when you find that French food is, surprisingly, usually labelled in French, this makes it even harder. How on earth do you know what Marrons Glaces and Confitures Extra Des Hautes Alpes are if you don't speak French?

Just so that you know, marrons glaces are not glass marrows, but are in fact candied chestnuts - an altogether more satisfying delicacy. Similarly, Confitures Extra Des Hautes Alpes are traditional high quality French jams from the Hautes Alpes region of France.

There are three possible routes which you could take when thinking about introducing French food and gourmet food gifts this Christmas. If you are handy in the kitchen yourself you could choose to purchase French ingredients and create your own French cuisine for your family or friends.

Alternatively, you could decide to exchange the traditional tin of supermarket chocolates for a jar of French Dried Porcini Mushrooms & Truffle Oil, French Chocolate Covered Walnuts & Coffee Beans or a traditional festive treat of Marrons Glaces & Creme de Marrons.

Not only is the taste on an entirely different level, but the textures, flavours, aromas and even the appearance all help to create a taste experience which will be enjoyed for a great deal longer than the same tin of sweets your family has been used to having for the past ten years or more.

The third option you have is to consider giving a gourmet gift to someone you know who is very keen on cooking and preparing food and meals for other people. Any cook will know that your meal is only ever as good as your ingredients. Even the best cook in the world, using the finest recipe in the world will struggle if presented only with standard ingredients. Gourmet ingredients help to lift a meal in very significant ways.

Such gourmet gift ideas might include Fleur de Sel de Guerande & Camargue, (which is not flour, but a very fine sea salt which brings out the flavour of any meal in a fantastic way), or Goose fat or duck fat, either of which can be used to add tremendous flavour and texture when roasting potatoes or meats.

This Christmas, give your taste buds a treat, or those of someone you know, and consider a gift of French food or gourmet food ingredients. They'll be more appreciated than a pair of socks, and considerably tastier.
