How To Body Cast Your Baby's Foot

Getting the best cast of your baby's foot is really very simple. It is all about the positioning of the child's foot.

The first part is to place your child on the very end of your helper's knee with the baby's legs dangling down. Then with one hand hold your child just above the top of the ankle, this will give you the most control if the child decides to wriggle whilst the foot is in the bag.

Hold the base of the bag of casting mixture in the palm of your other hand with your fingers cupping the bag. Do not hold the bag purely with the tips of your fingers, holding the bag too tightly will mean the moulding agent to seep over the top of the bag if the baby starts to move. Do not hesitate when placing the foot into the bag, confidently slide it in, in one movement.

Hesitation will make your body casting experience difficult. Once the baby's foot is in the mixture it is not uncommon for the child to feel somewhat uncomfortable, this is because of the cold water used to mix the body cast agent, however you are not harming your baby in any way.

Stay calm and keep the baby's leg still with the hand that is around the ankle, the baby will be moving their toes and foot around but this is ok, just try to keep the foot as central in the bag as possible making sure that you cannot see the foot at the side or bottom of the bag.

Should the foot appear at the side, squeeze the bag softly so that the mould again covers the foot. Another good tip is if you should see toes against the bag, push the baby's leg back slightly and pull the hand holding the bag forward, this will move the heel/ankle towards the back of the bag giving more space for the toes.

Once you cannot see any more skin or toes against the bag just relax and keep everything still and in place whilst the body cast finally sets. As the cast sets it will begin to turn into a rubberlike texture which will then slightly limit the baby's movements, it is at this moment that the impression of the foot is made.

Wait until the mould is firm to the touch, don't be hasty about taking the foot out, it is best to wait another minute if possible in order to achieve a best mould. Still holding the moulding bag, release the hand holding the baby's ankle and using your finger, start to introduce air into the mould by running it around the top of the mould which will then release the mould from your baby's foot.

Take your time and gently wiggle the bag to further release the foot from the cast, slowly ease the foot from the bag. Once you have the cast, use a knife to level the top of it, this will make it easier for you when it comes to filling with plaster.
