Many homes and some businesses have septic systems for their sewage. As the owner of the property it is your responsibility to maintain proper functionality of your septic system. There are several actions that can easily be taken to ensure decades of use from your system. It is better to maintain your system as well as being less expensive in the long run.

Periodically your septic system should be inspected and pumped out. Without these inspections and removal of waste the septic system can fail and pollute the ground around the septic tank. It can cost thousands of dollars to replace an entire septic system that has been compromised. Your groundwater can become polluted making your drinking water tainted.

Septic systems have four main components. They is the pipe that comes from the home, the septic tank which separates fats, solid wastes and liquids, a drain field for fluid overflow, and the soil which is full of microbes that will absorb the drainage and devouring the pollutants. To maintain your septic system in optimal performance mode The EPA recommends you have your system inspected and pumped every three to five years. If you have an alternative system which uses processes other than the soil to remove pollutants from the drainage or if it has mechanical components and electrical switches then have your system inspected about every year.

During the inspection, scum and sludge will be measured. The inspector will check if the sludge is within 12 inches of the outlet tee or scum is within six inches of the tee. If the solid wastes get too close to the outlet tee, there is potential it will be sucked out with the liquids. Note the levels of the scum and sludge in your maintenance report. Keeping a record of the measures will give you a good indication of how often you will need to have your septic tank pumped out.

There is disagreement on the accuracy of chemicals that claim to eliminate sludge. You cannot completely rid your septic system of the need to be pumped. Include records of maintenance and repairs that have been conducted on each inspector's visit. Hire an Atlanta plumber as soon as possible to repair issues the inspector is unable to do himself.

A great way to ensure that your septic will work for years is to make sure to have efficient plumbing. Low-flow toilets and faucet aerators can help reduce water usage helping your septic and drain field from flooding. This will help your pocketbook because your water bill will be lower. The more people you have in your home the more the septic will be used.

Keep in mind that water will all flow through the septic system. Any washing machine, dishwasher, shower, toilet, and sink will add to the tank. Garbage disposals may chop up your waste but it is not fluid and will settle to the bottom of your septic tank. Dispose of any food, oil or greasy waste in an appropriate container for trash pick-up or other disposal options.
