How Snoring and Sleep Deprivation Effect Us All

Sleep is mandatory. The human body cannot function properly without sleep. Our bodies need sleep to replenish themselves and to repair the mental and physical wear-and-tear we incure during the day. Today, millions of Americans complain they cannot get enough sleep. Our culture which "never sleeps" has created a sleep-depraved generation who visit the pharmacy and their doctors regularly to solve the problems they must tolerate, night after night, getting and staying asleep.

When we do not get the six to eight hours of sleep we need, we begin to build up a sleep debt. After several days of losing sleep, we begin to feel more and more tired. Some of us can make up sleep time taking short power naps during the day that relieve the symptoms of sleep deprivation. Many of us try to make up for lost sleep by sleeping longer on our days off. People try many solutions to get more sleep including: therapeutic pillows and mattresses, sleeping pills, anti-depressants, and alcohol and sedatives.

Are you trying hard to get the sleep you need, but finding the symptoms of those sleepless nights are sneaking up on you? At first, you may not have noticed that you were becoming more forgetful, impatient or easily frustrated. But when people around you started mentioning the way you repeat yourself or forget details of a conversation, it made you think something may be wrong. Snoring can cause sleep deprivation because the snorer may never be falling into a deep sleep, and is instead, waking himself up every half hour. Snoring may even be contributing to stress within the entire family since anyone around a snorer is disturbed by the loud snorts and exhaling sounds caused when the nasal passages of the snorer become congested or blocked. The snorer may not be breathing for several seconds, many times an hour, which is putting a strain on his heart and other organs. These sysmptoms are an indication that the snorer may have a medical condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea left untreated can lead to many serious health problems including: hypertension, heart attack and stroke.

If you snore, you have probably tried several remedies found at the pharmacy, such as sprays or nasal strips. But did you know there are some very simple natural remedies for snoring problems? Review these suggestions to help you get to sleep:
A) Stay on a sleep schedule. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day so your body clock will get used to the routine.

B) Mind your eating habits. Generally, you must avoid eating any large meals at least two hours before bed. Avoid caffeine and sugary snacks before bedtime.

C) Create a calming bedtime ritual. Take a relaxing shower or bath. Scents of lavender tends to be very relaxing.

D) Avoid watching television right before bed. Reading or journaling in a diary is a better practice.

E) Makeover your bedroom. Create your own sleeping sanctuary, not deidcated to work, eating or other daytime activities. Keep the room dark. Add comfortable bedding and pillows which give a feeling of pleasure and comfort. Keep the room cool and eliminate outside noise. You may want to consider earplugs, eye visors, and sound machines.
