A pill that can lessen hearing damage caused by loud noise has been being developed by scientists for years now by using lab animals. The Marines are being sent now. In a couple of months ahead, the Marines at California's Camp Pendleton, all 600 of them will venture into rifle training drinking something that tastes a lot like wild berry herbal tea while ear plugs are jammed in their ear canals.

This drink shall be taken with every meal while they plunge into the noisy two week training, something that is know the really lessen the ability to hear of the trainees to 10 percent. A substance dissolved in the concoction might be said to make a difference and this shall be proved in the hearing tests if all goes as hoped. The latest wrinkle in finding the pill that shall protect and perhaps cure the troubles brought by loud noise is this. While such an effort cannot be called new, the past years saw it to pick up steam, says the experts.

Based on the report from the federal government, hearing loss due to exposure to noise is found to be the first when it comes to the most common occupational health troubles and second among the most self reported occupational maladies or injuries. Approximately 10 million Americans lose their hearing due to loud noise, from either long term exposure or sudden bursts like for instance, an explosion. And it has been thought that nearly 30 million people today have no choice but to be exposed to hazardous levels of noise in their jobs as these careers, especially in mining, construction, manufacturing and agriculture come with a serious level of noise.

People on the look out includes even those in the professional music scene. Just some months ago, a man from a big band suddenly had to duck and cover his ears as soon as a trumpet behind him wailed and made him realized the value of wearing his ear protection first before anything else. Be careful when you hop on your snowmobile or motorcycle or when you plan to go for some recreational shooting as these can pose threats.

Earplugs and specialized sound deadening earmuffs are clearly helpful, but they're not always enough. They get overwhelmed by a few varieties of sounds. There are those that would not bother to wear such things even as they know its importance but then there are others who are just hearing damage prone. Even as the ears are protected somehow, damage can still occur when the sound reaches the skull.

That is since brute force by loud noise may not be the only thing that damages the delicate inner ear all the time. In other terms, the inner ear clearly gets provoked to produce dangerous oxygen molecules otherwise known to be called free radicals. Such defenses is possessed by the ear and antioxidants are known to eradicate free radicals from the parts of the body. But disturbance happens when noise gets to the ears and overwhelms the antioxidants.

The sound receptors found inside the ears die due to the damage of the free radicals. So it makes sense to try to build up the ear's antioxidant defenses as a preventive step, and as a fast treatment after noise exposure. Preventive measures created from animal experiment has become so promising and such excites individuals especially when they anticipate this form of protection for humans in exposure to noise.

There is one pioneer in the field of antioxidants for hearing who states that he has seen its marvelous effects on different patients. He was able to secure a nutritional supplement patent for what he recommended to hundreds of patients to remedy their hearing loss woes due to either aging or noise or both. Many patients marveled at how the progression of their hearing loss slowed down and how their hearing improved. People that clearly suffer from moderate to severe levels of hearing loss may not be swayed into leaving their hearing aids in the trash bins but then this sufficed in making these people remove their aids momentarily and shifting to a mode seen to be less forceful or perhaps even smaller.

A scientist who was hands on with the Marine experiment and his colleagues got good feedback in their experiments conducted on lab animals using a collection of different compounds of antioxidant. He is targeting N acetylcysteine or NAC, a substance already approved by federal authorities in remedying overdose on a popular painkiller. NAC not only neutralizes free radicals but also bolsters the ear's own antioxidant defenses. NAC was able to reduce hearing loss among the animals when it was given before and after they got exposed to the noise. For humans, the effect is synonymous to needing a hearing aid or not.
