How Hand Sanitisers Could Help Ease Your Business Through The Economic Recovery

At this time of year it is particularly important to make sure that hand sanitisers or sanitising wipes are distributed throughout the workplace. Hand sanitisers may well be one of the best ways of saving your business money, not to mention the health and welfare of those who either work within your business premises, or who visit it.

The trouble is that we have recently been experiencing particularly severe weather, with snow and ice across almost the whole of the UK, and temperatures well below freezing for much of the time, and little more than a few degrees above at best.

This has meant that many businesses are trying to keep the warmth inside as much as possible, putting heaters on all day, and shutting windows and doors wherever possible. Because of the fact that windows and doors are closed, and increasingly this means virtually sealed against the elements outside, germs and viruses are free to spread and thrive.

Without the circulation of fresh air germs are able to grow in number, and with heaters providing all the warmth that's needed, many workplaces are fast becoming a paradise on earth for the average virus.

Whilst this all spells really good news for the humble virus, it's not so good for businesses and those who work within them. Recycled air rather than fresh air, and steady warmth all mean that employees are especially prone to picking up germs, including bacteria and viruses. The use of hand sanitisers and sanitising wipes is one of the easiest and most important ways in which this problem can be tackled, since clearly the cold weather is likely to stay with us for some time to come, and few businesses are going to fling open all the doors and windows in the interests of health.

Hand sanitisers and sanitising wipes are easily distributed throughout a business, and cost very little. Certainly compared to losing a significant proportion of the work force through illness, resulting in lost business, missed targets and slower turnover, or the high fees associated with hiring temporary staff to cover those unable to attend, all means that businesses will be footing a rather large bill unless they are proactive in tackling the problem as quickly as possible.

Simply supplying soap and water is of little benefit since almost all employees will only use these once they have been to the toilet, (and sadly even then not everyone will use such facilities). What is important is to provide a cleansing product which is small, compact, and convenient. It is also important to make sure that it doesn't cause dryness or greasiness, since these are likely to result in few people using them very often.

Dermatologically tested hand sanitisers and sanitising wipes, preferably alcohol free and non-greasy, can be given either to individual members of staff, or placed in key locations around the workplace.

However, a word of warning: some hand sanitisers can actually cause germs to spread more easily. How is this possible? If a hand sanitiser requires physical contact in order to use it, such as an awkward, supermarket box of sanitising wipes, then all that will happen is that germs will be transferred to the packaging before use, and then once the hands have been cleaned and the package closed or put away, the germs are transferred straight back to the hand.

It is remarkable just how many times germ laden hands come into contact with the mouth. Every day gestures tend to mean that the hands come into direct contact with the mouth several times every hour, and just a split second on any one of those occasions could result in an infection entering the body.

The best solution is to ensure that employees have their own hand sanitiser or pack of sanitising wipes, or you could try introducing an electronic no touch hand sanitiser. The electronic no touch hand sanitiser has a sensor built in which detects the movement of hands underneath the dispenser. A small quantity of the gel is dispensed, all without any need for the hands to come into direct contact with any part of the packaging.

With coughs and sneezes spreading germs all across keyboards, mice and stationery, and with hands coming into regular contact with germ laden items such as door handles and computer equipment, it is essential to make sure that during this particular season your business provides a suitable solution such as individual hand sanitisers or packets of sanitising wipes, since the result of doing nothing may well be a workforce cut in half, right at the very moment you're trying to climb out of the recession.
