Here is an interesting "brain teaser" for you. What costs a fortune, comes with unwanted side effects and does not offer the hoped for results? Our answer is: prescription drugs that people take to slow down inflammation. Consumers who have joint issues, brain, cardiovascular and eye problems are not concerned about these games. The question that they want answered is: do fish oil supplements work?

I am not attempting to be glib here, but it makes sense that treating the cause of a disease is more effective than trying to make the symptoms less obtrusive. This is an important point because there are millions of drugs sold each day that take that approach.

I even understand why people buy them. They want relief as quickly as possible and are willing to take the chances on the side effects. However, different approaches must be taken if one really wants long term relief, and that is why fish oil supplements have become so popular.

For instance, hypertension is a symptom of vitamin D deficiency. Giving a patient a drug to calm him/her down may temporarily solve the problem. Getting more vitamin D in the patients diet will fix it.

This is the problem with prescription drugs. They are filling a demand for quick relief but are not designed for a permanent solution. The reason that fish oil supplements work is that they give the body the tools it needs - not only to heal itself but prevent a disease from occurring in the first place.
How do fish oil supplements work?

The same way that eating certain species of seafood works - by giving us a lot of omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are part of every cell membrane in the body. They have a big part in how our cells interact with each other. Inflammation is basically a situation where the bodies immune system reacts to a scrape or a virus and does not know when to stop.

There is a famous line from an old Paul Newman movie that goes; "What we have got here is a failure to communicate." Omega 3s helps the immune system know when to stop. Think of it this way. If the body keeps fighting a non existent problem, that means the body is fighting itself.

If this happens in the joints, arthritis is often the result. A drug may reduce swelling but not help the immune system.

Fish oil helps in other areas also. They are fast acting and very adaptable. This is very important for the fast paced neurons of the brain. Many research studies have shown that omega 3s can help with clinical depression and even Alzheimer's. New born babies who have sufficient omega 3s score higher on IQ and other cognitive development tests as they get older.

With professionals in the health field, you do not need to ask: do fish oil supplements work? A better query is: which products? Keep in mind that these omega 3s come from fish. Spoilage and effectiveness will always be concerns. Focus your research on getting the best. For help in this area, please visit my website.
