Depression is quite common in today's stress filled world. It may be that our friends or family members are suffering from depression.
What can we do to help them out? When we realize that someone we love and care for, is feeling depressed, what can we do to make that person feel better? If you are at your wits end, then the following tips might prove handy to you.
1. Educate Yourself First:
When you lack knowledge, you may not deal with the situation properly. So visit various sites and forums on internet where you can find information about how to deal with depression. This should be your first step.
There are hundreds of sites where you can find information about the causes, effects as well as treatments related to depression. When you arm yourself with knowledge, you will feel confident of dealing with this situation.

2. Be Caring:
Show your love in simple things like helping out the depressed person in household work. Even simple tasks may seem a big burden for depressed people. So you can help them out with grocery shopping or paying bills, washing dishes etc.
Remember that it is common for depressed people to behave in an irrational manner. They may get easily irritated or angry. Do not feel bad about this as they are probably doing so because of their own frustrations. It is not that they have stopped loving you. So just be understanding and polite with them.
3. Get Professional Help if Needed:
If you feel you cannot handle this alone, do not hesitate to seek outside help. If the depression problem is getting out of hand then encourage the patient to seek professional help . Tell them that early treatment of this problem can be very beneficial to everyone concerned.
Support them properly when they are undergoing treatment. Do not make them feel like social outcasts. At the same time, make sure that there is no negligence on the part of the patient as far as treatment is concerned.
Also encourage them to try out different things which can make them feel good. Depression self help is important, as patients themselves should actively try out different treatment strategies.

4. Motivate Them to Continue:
Many times, depressed people do not want to continue treatment, specially if they don't see quick results. They would want to throw in the towel. During such times, you have to be at their side and convince them to continue treatment. Try to instill hope and confidence in them of a brighter future.
Remind them of the Mercy of their Lord. Remind them of His favors upon us and the fact that He shall take care of us. Tell them that the darkness of the night shall soon end, followed by a bright morning.
Also remind them politely of their responsibilities towards their spouse, children or old parents. Bring their focus on those people who are important to them so that they will continue to persist in fighting off depression.
