If you have spent any time at all looking at the financial world, then you know all about the challenges that people face when they have poor credit. It can be tough to get mortgages with a bad credit score and it can be hard to get auto loans with an acceptable interest rate. With that having been said, you must do everything in your power to improve your credit score if you want to thrive in today's world. In order to do that, one must understand what a credit score is and some of the ways that it can be affected.

Your credit report is basically the register of everything that you do financially over a period of time. This period is normally seven years and each of your payments, accounts, and open balances will be recorded there. Credit reports are compiled by the major credit agencies from information that they gather from all of your creditors. At the end of the report, everything that you have done will be tallied up and you will be given a credit score, which will typically range from 500 to 800. Anything above 700 is excellent, while anything below 600 is really poor.

You have free access to your credit report under the law once per year. Getting a free credit report requires consumers to use the government's site for that purpose. Though you can check it once every year for free, it is more important to keep up with it on a more regular basis. You want to do this because there can often be errors on the report that will impact your score.

Sometimes, things just get misreported or the credit agency records something wrong. It does not happen often, but when it does, your credit score will suffer. It is your job as a consumer to keep up with it and if something is wrong, you have to alert the reporting agencies. Additionally, you could end up as the victim of identity theft.

In today's world, people are stealing identity at an all-time high rate. With your social security number in hand, someone could open up an account in your name and wreck your credit if you do not notice this in time. The important of a good credit score cannot be overstated. It will allow you to get title loans, mortgages, and any other loans that you apply for.

If you have a poor score, then you must enhance it. This might be done easily, by looking at your report and removing any errors from it. You might also be able to do it the hard way by actually taking new credit accounts in order to make regular payments. Any solid credit history that you add will boost your credit score a little bit at a time.
