How Anti-Oxidants Fight Against the Aging Process

Anti-oxidants are the body?s answer to free radicals. Amazingly, antioxidants can donate one of their electrons to a free radical without becoming unstable in the process, because they are stable in either form; that is, with paired or unpaired electrons. This action neutralizes the free radical and causes it to become stable once again.

Antioxidants are called free radical scavengers because they make it easy for the free radical to get that extra electron from them. This saves the free radical causing damage to cells by floating around and stealing its extra electron from another source. The aging process caused by the damage of free radicals is then greatly slowed.

So what other benefits do antioxidants have for our bodies? They don?t only go around happily giving away their electrons to free radicals to slow down aging. They also boost the immune system, delay or prevent eye problems such as macular degeneration or cataracts, help avoid heart disease and Vitamin E is thought to slow down the progress of Alzheimer?s disease.

So where do we find antioxidants? Vitamins C, An and E are good antioxidants. They are easily available in fruit and vegetables - especially those of an orange color - and leafy greens. Other substances that are antioxidants are beta-carotene, lycopene and selenium. Black and green tea has a great number of antioxidants and - good news for coffee lovers - so does coffee.

Our bodies also produce some kinds of the many antioxidants that we use- glutathione, for instance. It is important to have many different kinds of antioxidants because not every type can react with every kind of free radical. A specific type of antioxidant is needed for each different kind of free radical.

Location also plays an important part in the process. Certain antioxidants are stored only in certain parts of the body, e.g. the liver. These would not be able to give their electrons to free radicals causing damage in another part of the body. Certain other antioxidants are stored in the eye tissues and are able to protect them from free radical damage, but not other parts of the body.

So you can see that it is necessary to consume as wide a variety of fruit, vegetables, berries and nuts as possible to obtain the right kinds of antioxidants. Since it is not always possible to eat enough of the right foods, health food supplements may also help.
