Honesty Works Both Ways

Let’s begin by accepting that companies are simply consumers themselves at work in a collective group. Once we look at this we can begin to understand that the consumer is playing a profound role in the process. Often times, companies and consumers mirror back to each other what they feel is being presented to themselves; for instance, you are talking to a steel building salesman and you are not being totally honest with him regarding your situation. He may ask you qualifying questions pertaining to when you intend to purchase a building or specifically what he or she will have to do to earn your business or if you have received any other quotes. You may think letting him know this information will put you in a compromising position, therefore you tell him an untruth or you respond as vague a possible. Did you ever think that he is just you at work? Would you not ask yourself the same or similar questions if the roles were reversed? When you are not genuine or totally honest, we often times get back what we put out! So again, you respond out of integrity.

Now what just happened? We have all read in the good book, “You reap what you sow”. Well did this consumer not reap deception back? Why would a consumer expect the company (consumers collectively together) to not respond back to them with untruths or vagueness? We live in a society where in we expect people to operate from a moral platform that we ourselves won’t operate from. I heard in a recent seminar that you cannot see something in someone that is not already in you.

If you want a company to be completely honest with you, then be completely honest with them. When a salesman asks you a direct question, give him or her a direct answer. You both will appreciate the clarity and honesty. I think the song; ‘Man in the Mirror’ by Michael Jackson says it best. It states, “….if you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make that change”. If everyone just focuses on their own ethics and integrity and simply gets clear on what they want to purchase and how they want to purchase it, then the ethical issue will resolve itself. When you are honest and clear it is very easy to pick up when someone else is not. In addition, there are numerous avenues one can check to verify a company’s reputation.
