Homeschooling And The Ins And Outs Of Teaching Your Children At Home

Many people see homeschooling as 'do it yourself education' and the majority of parents immediately see themselves as the 'you' in 'yourself'. As a result, many parents who have busy lives earning a living or pursuing other important activities, and especially loan parents, dismiss any ideas of homeschooling out of hand. But are they correct to take this course of action?

Homeschooling has been with us for a very long time and involves more than 1,000,000 children in the United States and experience means that are many options available to parents today. Indeed, it is no surprise to find that parents in just about any situation imaginable have found the solution to homeschooling their children.

Of course we are all familiar with the traditional two parent family with dad out at work and mum looking after the home and this situation makes homeschooling a quite simple option. Since the 1960s society has changed a great deal and now there are a whole spectrum of family situations including, single parents, extended families, role reversal, same-sex couples and much more.

Each situation brings with it both problems and advantages for homeschooling and it is a matter of studying both and then finding ways to overcome the difficulties and enhance the advantages.

As an example, a number of parents turn to their wider family or friends for assistance and ask friends or family into their home to help. This is nothing new of course and, for many years, it was not uncommon for families to offer a friend or an older family member like an uncle a place to stay in exchange for assisting with the care and education of the children.

Help can also frequently come from neighbors. Many 'stay-at-home' moms already provide day care for children and, as homeschooling continues to spread, babysitting services are increasingly being extended to encompass homeschooling.

In more and more cases families are also combining their resources to provide homeschooling on a 'group' basis.

Another popular option is to employ a tutor. Nowadays tutors come from a wide range of different backgrounds, at all ages and include both specialists, like those teaching music or languages, as well as general tutors. In fact, it is not unusual to find ex-private or public school teachers who have become dissatisfied with the 'system' turning to tutoring because of their deep love of teaching.

Most parents believe that tutoring is quite simply beyond their financial reach but, having researched the subject carefully, they are generally surprised to learn that the cost of engaging a tutor is not beyond their means.

Another important consideration is the children themselves. It is surprising just how well motivated children are by the independence which homeschooling brings and many parents find that teaching a child at home can take much less time than you might think.

If you find yourself tempted by the advantages of homeschooling over the poor quality of the public school system then do not fall into the common pitfall of simply dismissing the idea out-of-hand. Instead take the time to examine the options open to you and you might well be surprised to discover that it is easier than you think.
