Maybe you were one of the lucky ones who found a high-definition, large-screen television under the tree. Or maybe you took advantage of the post-holiday electronics sales to upgrade your television. Now you have to adapt your décor to fit your television. Here are a few things to keep in mind when setting up your new home theatre system:

The basement is the ideal location for your home theatre. There is less light interference, ceilings and walls can usually be sound-proofed and there is usually more room for speakers and other equipment.

The larger the screen, the further the distance for ideal viewing.
Home Theatre Tips - If the screen is 27” to 31”, ideal viewing distance is six to 10 feet away
Home Theatre Tips - If the screen is 32” to 40”, the ideal viewing distance is eight to 12 feet away
Home Theatre Tips - If the screen is over 40”, seating should be a minimum of 10 feet away from the screen

Acoustics are improved by carpeting, soft, padded furniture and drapes. Sound reflects off bare walls and floors, causing fuzzy and distorted sound quality.

Electricity is an important component of your home theatre system. Take a look at the circuits in a room as many systems require more than one circuit and grounded outlets. A surge protector is also a wise investment to avoid electrical surges which can damage your expensive system.

Electrical components generate heat, so installing a media fan in the interior of home theatre cabinetry is often recommended. Opt for fans that are quiet and thermostatically-controlled, so they switch on only when needed.

Finally, when purchasing or building a cabinet to house the related equipment, make sure there is a shelf or two free to expand the system with add-on equipment that is sure to become available in the near future.
