There are many designs out there on the world wide web and also there is not't a shortage of books that have designs from A-Z.

How much power a home consumes should be a factor when calculating the cost of a home. The more efficient a home is, the more you can pad your wallet. When going through and looking at all options, going efficient doesn't necessarily need to be expensive. A couple of items you can research and calculate operating cost is solar panels and water heaters.

There are two systems you can chose from, Traditional or Solar. In a traditional system, power is ran from the power company to you and you are billed accordingly. With a solar system, you have an option to stay completely "Off-The-Grid" where you are solely running on energy from the sun, batteries, and a back up generator. Another solar option is to still be hooked up "Grid-Tied" in which your are still working on energy produced by the sun, but can flow the power back through the lines to the power company. In case of an emergency, the solar option should still have a back up generator available.

In looking at home building plans, another item to look at is the water heater. In short, a traditional water heater is less efficient due to heat loss and the water heater constantly having to kick on to keep the water at the set temperature. A tankless water is only like a traditional in the aspect that it still takes as long for the water to travel to the appliance. The difference is that it heats the water as it is needed and is non-stop. Though, be careful to not leave the water running for long periods of time as you may lose that money saving efficiency.

Other areas to consider in home building is the type of windows you are installing, the heating an cooling system, energy consumption of appliances, materials available.

In researching for your home building plans, read all information carefully, consult the laws and regulations in your area, but most importantly, It's your dream home, have fun in doing this.
