Any thorough traveller of South East Asia will have doubtless encountered the beautiful climate, the delicious and diverse cuisine and the multicultural splendour of Malaysia. Here''s a quick look at why Malaysia is such a popular destination.

Starting from the cosmopolitan hub of Kuala Lumpur, which is where most international flights will arrive, it is easy to get a taste of Malaysia''s culturally diverse population within minutes. A quick walk through colourful and chirpy China town will lead you into the more atmospheric Little India, passing through Merdaka Square - the major colonial centre of the city.

KL''s most beloved sights include the glorious Petronus towers - best viewed at night when they are spectacularly illuminated, the Batu Caves - a natural wonder transformed into a Hindu place of worship a little out of the city centre, Bukit Bintang - centre of fine dining and retail therapy and the wonderful Saturday night market to the north of the city.

From southern-central Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia''s excellent infra-structure of public transport allows easy access to most other popular destinations. To explore a city a little quieter than KL but with culture and art oozing from its colourful, Dutch colonial streets, a trip to Melaka comes highly recommended. At night, wander through the Chinese markets and by day indulge in many a Malay treat at the artisan shops and caf?s lining the narrow walkways.

On the other hand, adrenaline seekers should head straight for Taman Negara. Here you will find yourself deep in some of the oldest rainforest in the whole of South East Asia. The night tour of the jungle, complete with overnight stay in treetop residence, is not to be missed. If you are planning on trekking, hiking, biking or kayaking your way through this fascinating terrain, be sure to get the thumbs up from your travel insurance company beforehand.

For the perfect family destination, the Cameron Highlands are a breath of fresh are. Not only are they a welcome respite from the oppressive heat and humidity of the rest of Peninsular Malaysia, being much higher up and away from the coast, the Cameron Highlands provide beautiful scenery and an array of fascinating touring opportunities. Jungle trekking here is a far tamer experience. Hike through the forests to glimpse the Rafflesia Flower - the biggest variety of flower in the world - as well as numerous other species of exotic flora and fauna. The treks here are easy enough for all ages and abilities. Don''t forget to break for a teatime scone - a tasty British relic from colonial days.

If it''s a romantic break you''re after, there are few destinations more beautiful, atmospheric and relaxing than Langkawi Island. This idyllic retreat offers friendly accommodation, wonderful local food, beautiful sights, fascinating ecological tours but, most importantly, miles and miles of pristine beaches and not just a few glorious spa hotels.

So whether you''re travelling alone, with friends, family or on a romantic trip away with your partner, Peninsular Malaysia has something for every kind of traveller.
