Spacious, airy, beautifully appointed with modern utilities, fittings and features, luxury Malta villas are the perfect base from which to enjoy the many ancient delights across the island.

Malta has been recognised for centuries as the crossroads of the Mediterranean.

Sitting only 60 miles (97km) south of Sicily and 160 miles (257km) north of Libya, the island of Malta covers just 95 square miles (246 sq km) and is the largest of the populated islands in the Maltese archipelago.

It is this position which has uniquely helped develop the island's past. Strategically located, Malta has been an important commercial and military bridgehead for numerous empires over several centuries. There are even some prehistoric sites on the island older even than the Egyptian pyramids, stretching as far back as 7000 years. It's amazing to think that the megalithic temples of Ä gantija on nearby Gozo and Mnajdra on Malta itself are some of the world's oldest free standing structures in the world, dating back to 3500 BC.

In the intervening time, amongst others, the Phoenicians, Romans, Normans, French and finally the British have all played their part in creating Malta's rich and vibrant history. It was in only as recently as 1964 that the British left and Malta was able to establish it independence. All of these different residents have left the island with a unique mix of history and culture. These various Influences resulted in a stunning amount of history crammed into an island so small it barely takes a short bus ride to get from one side to the other.

Perhaps the best known of the island's previous inhabitants are the Knights of the Order of St John, given a lease of the island in perpetuity by King Charles I of Spain in 1530. Having survived several attacks in the sixteenth century, the Knights went on to achieve fame by building the immense fortifications in Valletta. These defenses were put to a different test 400 years after, when the Second World War brought further invasion attempts. Churchill referred to Malta as an "unsinkable aircraft carrier" and the islanders' bravery was rewarded in the Second World War by being awarded the George Cross by King George VI in 1942.

Somehow, despite suffering terribly and forcing Commander-in-Chief South of Axis forces Albert Kesselring to report to the German High Command that "There is nothing left to bomb", Malta and especially the island's capital retains an ancient splendour.
If you love steep, ancient winding lanes oozing history, steps and passageways, hidden squares and alleyways, stunning museums and breathtaking 16th Century churches frozen in time then Malta holidays provide a true window on the past.

Be prepared for a life long romance as the island welcomes back visitors year after year who come to sample a taste of yesteryear and to marvel at her ancient beauty and charm
