Holiday ideas for 2010

2010 was going to see a return of overseas travel and whilst waving goodbye to the staycation. Cast your mind back to the start of the year and you may recall travel experts harking on about the benefits of long-haul travel to Thailand in particular. However, with its current political turmoil, this tropical treasure seems to be off limits if you value your safety and your chances of returning home.

At the same time, the short-haul destination of 2010 for British travellers was going to be Greece, with bookings at the end of 2009 exceeding all expectations. But what a difference a financial crisis makes. As a result of massive protests and tear gas, many tourists are avoiding the Grecian goddess this summer.

Tourism to South Africa has received a big boost this year as it became the first African country to host the World Cup. This led to travel journalists tipping it as hot favourite to win over the Brits. Well, it kind of did. Footie mad men and their sun-worshipping WAGS have booked tickets there, but Cape Town''s chilly winter weather isn''t the only thing to put people off lately.

Flight prices have gone stratospheric and many people have been priced out of the market. Only the most dedicated, prudent or rich can afford to be jet-setting to SA. Maybe it will get a post-World Cup boost?

So in reality, what are your options now we are almost half way through the first year in this new decade? Short haul wise, Turkey and Tunisia come out trumps. Neither uses the Euro and their currencies are weak enough that the depreciating Pound still goes a long way. Oh and the weather and beaches are fantastic too.

A Turkish five-star may not be quite as outstanding as one in Paris or New York, but you definitely won''t pay as much either. Five-star all-inc breaks to Turkey can be as little as ?300 and you can quite easily get one for ?400.

Long-haul wise you have two main options: choose cheap flights but pay more once you have landed, or choose more expensive flights then pay next to nothing at your destination.

America falls into the first category. Flights are few hundred Pounds to hop across the pond, but hotels and activities will cost a little more. However, thanks to a rather tasty Pound to Dollar exchange rate your money should actually go pretty far.

Falling into the second category is India and Costa Rica. Goa and Kerala in Southern India are composed of pristine beaches, warm water and swinging palm trees. Pretty much the whole of Costa Rica is a rainforest, which meets miles of white sand beaches and crashing waves along its coastline. Both places really feel like an escape from the norm. You will pay more for the flight but your Pounds will go a lot further when you arrive.
