There could still be some history made, even though there is no Triple Crown at stake in the 2010 Belmont gambling.

You will see a different winner of the 3rd Triple Crown competition in Belmont wagering since Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver and Preakness winner Lookin at Lucky will not be in the lineup.

On Saturday, June 5th, history may very well be made in the Belmont. Neither Ice Box nor First Dude, who were runner-ups in the first two legs of the Triple Crown, ran in both contests. There have in fact been 6 different horses that have finished in the money in the first two Triple Crown contests. If Ice Box and First Dude run out of the money in the Belmont there would be 9 different horses that finished in the money in the three contests. That hasn't occurred in many years.

Back in 1926, there were in fact 9 different horses that finished in the money positions in the Triple Crown. It happened the year before in 1925. Could it happen on this occasion? Since Ice Box is going to be the favorite in the Belmont, it seems somewhat unlikely. He would have to finish out of the money and then First Dude would also need to finish out of the top three spots. Both of those scenarios probably won't happen but in the Belmont anything is possible.

There is no doubt that this year's Belmont will not have as much interest with no popular horses running. However, that doesn't mean it can't be a great competition. There was really not much intrigue to the competition just this past year, but the Belmont was still very competitive. It also produced a great horse in Summer Bird. He was in fact a far greater horse this past year than Mine That Bird who has not succeeded in a competition since taking the Kentucky Derby. A horse like Ice Box or First Dude could possibly be in a similar situation in this year's competition. Both are able to be excellent as time goes on.

Nick Zito, Ice Box's trainer, has succeeded in the Belmont 2 times in the past. He won with longshots in 2004 and in 2008. Birdstone paid out $74 in 2004 while Da'Tara paid out $79 in 2008. Both of those horses shut down Triple Crown hopes as Da'Tara beat Big Brown and Birdstone upset Smarty Jones, even though neither of those horses were highly respected. This time around Zito may have another horse with single-digit odds on Saturday, June 5th, and this one will be the favorite. Zito is the trainer for both the favorite in the Belmont, Ice Box, and the likely second choice in betting, Fly Down. Both of the horses are expected to ship to New York on Wednesday. Fly Down worked four-furlongs last Saturday in 49 2/5 seconds. Ice Box has succeeded in three of his eight career starts and earned $906,535. Fly Down has succeeded in three of his 5 starts and earned $182,070.

The Belmont Stakes is on Saturday, June 6th and while there will not be any big name horses in the lineup there still could possibly be some history made in the final Triple Crown competition of the season.
