Many different types of structures are created out of concrete. Your entire house may have been built from concrete. So it's important to take the time to understand this building materials more, so that you can work on preserving your house.

Concrete is generally accepted as one of the most durable building material in the world. But what most people do not know is that concrete still needs to be protected. Here is how damage can occur to concrete, if you are not careful.

As concrete is a very hard material when completely dry, it tends to crack when there are temperature changes. This is because the surface cannot expand and contract when there is a change of temperature. So cracks start to appear. Usually, the cracks start off as hair line cracks, and they are hardly visible. Hence, they are usually ignored. But this leads to other problems.

Dirt, oil, grime and grease starts to penetrate the concrete. This means that the interior of the concrete now contains foreign substances. This cannot be good. Over time, such substances weaken the internal structure of the concrete. It can take a long time before someone discovers that the concrete is being damaged from the inside. This could lead to disastrous consequences. Entire concrete slabs can be separated because of such damage.

The situation is even worse if the concrete is exposed to water. Water starts seeping into the cracks and loosen the sand within the concrete. And if this process continues, the damage will occur faster. Water may even freeze within the cracks, causing more damage.

One would expect the problems to disappear when the water evaporates. But this isn't true. Air may still be in the cracks, and when exposed to temperature, air expands, further loosening the sand.

Therefore, it is important to prevent this from happening right from the onset.

One important tip to note: Never be stingy when it comes to choosing sealers. It's a worthy long term investment. A single coat of sealer can make all the difference. It will help protect the concrete, and prevent damage, which may lead to costly repairs. How can high end sealers help to protect the concrete?

Firstly, high end sealers are slightly elastic, even when dried. Therefore, even when there are temperature changes, the sealer will be able to stretch (or contract), thus protecting the surface from cracking.

Furthermore, if concrete is exposed to the outdoors, the sealer act as an additional layer of protection against, rain, soil, sand, and other damaging elements. If the concrete surface is soiled by such elements, you can easily clean the surface by spraying it with water or using a damp cloth (if the concrete surface is small enough).

Once you have applied at least one layer of water repellent sealer, the concrete will most certainly last a lot longer.
