There are a multitude of herbs that have remedial or medicinal properties. In this article we explore just a few of the more well known herbs and their uses.

Garlic

In high doses, garlic produces a decrease in blood pressure, both highest and lowest. It has vasodilating effects, and is recommend for people suffering from hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and heart dysfunctions.

Garlic helps with anticlotting of platelets (prevents an excessive tendency of platelets to group, forming clots), and fibrinolytic (disintegrates fibrin, the protein that forms blood clots). This makes garlic highly recommended for people suffering from thrombosis, embolism, or vascular accidents due to the lack of blood flow.

It decreases the level of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) in the blood, because it makes its absorption by the intestine more difficult. It has been proven that in the hours following a breakfast of toast with butter, the level of cholesterol increases 20%, however when the bread is rubbed with garlic, even if it has butter, this increase does not take place.

Since it normalizes the level of sugar in blood, it is a must for people suffering from diabetes, and obesity. Garlic is also an antibiotic and antiseptic.

Coriander

Coriander is rich in vitamin C, calcium, and iron, phosphorous. Also it contains large amount of flavanoids, magnesium and beta-carotene. Coriander leaves if eaten everyday helps in aiding digestion and prevents flatulence.

The inflammatory properties that coriander contains help in alleviating the symptoms of arthritis in a person. Coriander also prevents urinary tract infections.

In addition to these properties, coriander leaves also prevent nausea, food poisoning, dyspepsia and vomiting. If you also feel like vomiting, just wash and chew some leaves of coriander. Also, you can prepare wonderful coriander chutney by adding some tomatoes and onions with spices to add more taste to your food.

Parsley

Parsley contains a large amount of chlorophyll, and as such is a natural breath sweetener. Eat the leaves right off the plant to combat breath odors.

Throughout history, Parsley Teas have been used mainly as kidney stone, bladder infection, and jaundice medications, as well as digestive aids. The root appears to be more effective than the leaves, but leaves can also be used. Leaves can be dried, pulverized into a powder, and inserted in capsules, if desired. See the link below for more information. Pregnant women should avoid all but small quantities of Parsley because it can be irritating to the kidneys.

Externally, make an Oil of Parsley leaves and roots to repel head lice, and try making an Ointment for use on swellings. Pound the leaves into a paste and mix with a little water or tea to use on skin for easing symptoms from bug bites and stings. A little oatmeal can be added to this mixture for better consistency. Try dipping a cloth in unsweetened tea and place over closed eyes for 10 minutes to reduce fatigue and swelling of the eyes.

Peppermint

Peppermint is a common and fast growing mint that makes a great tea. The taste of peppermint is refreshing and cooling on a hot summer day. It is also soothing to an upset stomach, due to the menthol it contains. The menthol in peppermint soothes the lining of the digestive tract an stimulates the production of bile, which is an essential digestive fluid. A hot cup of herbal tea is an excellent way to settle your stomach after a big meal.

Peppermint is the flavoring of choice for toothpaste as it is an excellent breath freshener. When using peppermint tea as a breath freshener, increase the effectiveness by adding a pinch of anise, caraway or cinnamon. Menthol vapors are famous for relieving nasal, sinus and chest congestion. For a more effective cold remedy, combine peppermint with elder flower and yarrow. For a hacking cough, drink 3 to four cups of cool peppermint tea throughout the day, taking a sip every 15 to 30 minutes.
