Our sense of hearing is always taken for granted since most everyone believe it is something we are born with and will die with as well. Unfortunately, people can lose their hearing and a person doesn't even have to be well advanced in years. It is of prime importance then to check out the causes and reasons that cause hearing disorders and how these could be treated.

Babies are more at risk from hearing loss than anything else. Adults can get hearing loss, but not only them as children and even babies can get them too. Common causes of hearing loss are genetics, hearing loss, being sick and drinking medication.

Environmental noise that is loud and beyond normal decibel levels can cause a person to lose his or her hearing. An airport worker such as a runway assist personnel are regularly subjected to extreme levels of noise. A person who listens to loud music through headphones can lose their sense of hearing as well.

Depending on the form of hearing impairment, a speciailist will most likely prescribed the use of hearing aids to treat it. Determining what type of hearing aid may be a little complicated as there are many different types available. Hearing aids in general are simply amplifiers of sound to the person wearing it.

Where the electro acoustic device is worn will determine the class of the hearing aid. Hearing aids that are worn behind the ear and is made up of a case, tube and ear mold are called BTE aids. The BTE is a favorite among users and doctors as it is very sturdy and lasts longer than other aids, since it is worn outside the ear.

Another type of hearing aid that is gaining momentum in the medical field are cochlear ear implants. The cochlear implant is a device that needs to be surgically placed behind the ear and underneath the scalp area of a person. In easiest terms, the implant works by picking up sound and speech, then converts these into impulses which are transmitted to the nerves by electrodes.

A cochlear implant is made up of a microphone, speech processor, transmitter, receiver, stimulator and many tiny electrodes. Only developed and rich countries are able to provide patients with this implant option as it is a very expensive procedure. The success of the operation lies in a lot of factors such as a person?s hearing history, cause of hearing loss, amount of residual hearing, health status and commitment to rehabilitation or post implant therapy.

Lastly, along the lines of science fiction is another form of hearing treatment called gene therapy. Gene therapy is a solution where new cochlea cells are grown specifically for patients. Gene therapy is the hope of tomorrow and is still a new science today.

While prevention is still the best cure to hearing impairment, when hearing loss is unavoidable, these hearing treatments will provide you a glimpse of hope in recovering or managing it. There are many types of hearing treatments available, and the only way to find out which one is for you is to find a doctor. It is time you get your hearing checked.
