Health insurance – Expecting The Unexpected

When you're young, the last thing on your mind is health insurance. You feel fit, healthy and after all, there's always the NHS to fall back on. But as you get older and responsibilities start to mount, your health becomes more of an issue. Whilst the NHS may offer free treatment to everyone, having additional health insurance can mean shorter waiting times should you have serious need of medical help.

Weighing the costs.

Health insurance is common in almost every other country in the world. Having additional health cover could mean the difference between spending hours waiting in accident and emergency to see a doctor, or being taken straight to a private medical centre to see a specialist within a much shorter space of time. This may seem like a case of one law for the rich and another for the poor, but the truth is that the state health system is struggling to cope with demand. This is why many people are now turning to private medical and health insurance to give themselves an added layer of protection should the worst happen.

Health insurance is surprisingly good value. For the sake of a few extra pounds a month, you can buy a health insurance policy that will protect you and your family, giving them all access to high quality health care whenever they need it. Because the state system is so overstretched, non-emergency cases can often take a very low priority. So if you have a knee problem for example, you could find yourself waiting months or even years to see a specialist. Private health insurance could mean that you get to see that specialist much more quickly.

Health insurance isn't just about dealing with the unexpected. Health insurance can also protect you financially, as well as taking better care of your health, particularly if an illness or accident damages your ability to earn a living. Including extras such as a serious illness clause or cover that protects you in the event of an accident that incapacitates you for any length of time means you don't run the risk of falling behind on mortgage payments, for example. The last thing you need to worry about when you're ill or injured is whether your finances are stable. By taking out a health insurance policy with added financial protection, you can concentrate on recovery, rather than worrying about the mortgage payments.

Private health insurance also offers you the chance to access higher standards of medical care that the NHS can sometimes struggle to provide because of the demands made on the state system. Innovative treatment, access to drugs that are often too expensive for the NHS to use, private hospitals and highly qualified doctors and nurses means that your overall standard of care in the private sector is going to be higher than you would find in an overstretched NHS hospital. Some people see private health insurance as a way to 'queue jump', but when your health or the well being of a loved one is on the line, isn't it natural to want the very best treatment you can afford? Health insurance policies give you that reassurance and an additional layer of protection should the unexpected happen.

Having additional health insurance makes good financial sense. More and more employers are including private health insurance as a 'benefit in kind' for their employees, but if you're self-employed or don't work for a company that offers this provision, you're relying on the state system to look after you. Particularly for the self-employed, who don't have the benefit of sick pay, taking out additional medical insurance is a sound financial move that could play an important role in your own health and your financial health should you fall ill or have an accident. For the sake of a few pounds a month, it's a worthwhile investment in you and your family's future.
