For many people the garden is something to think about only on occasion, such as when the lawn needs mowing. Certainly it is not something many people worry about much. Of course gardening is one of the most popular hobbies in the world but if you don't 'get it' then you are unlikely to bother.
But if you have kids this is a mistake. The garden is an area that can provide entertainment, adventure and exercise for children. It is an outdoor space that they can go to any time and, if you have given it due attention, it will be safe for them to play in. For children the garden is all about one thing - fun!
Kids and the Garden - Introduce the Fun!
Children don't share the same worries as you, they don't think you should get the old cylinder mower out and start mowing the lawn right away - and they don't care about your rose bed. What they want to do is enjoy the outdoor space, and you should help them.
How? Glad you asked!
* Set up a 'sports field'. Many children, especially boys, love to play sport... and setting up a mini sports pitch, even if it is just a small soccer goal, will encourage them to play it. This helps encourage them to play outside, to get exercise - vital in this day of video games.
* Get some patio furniture. Might sound odd, after all how much do kids care about furniture? But with good patio furniture, even if you don't have a patio, you can take traditionally indoor things outdoors. Eating outside is something kids love, but such activities as board games or drawing outside is a rare treat for them.
* Toys. Climbing frames, sand pits, frisbees - there are a huge number of toys designed for outdoor use. Often these toys require some sort of exercise to interact with which again means that the child is enjoying him or herself and exercising at the same time.
* Games. By playing with your children outside, making up games, you interact with children in a way they will always remember. Come up with some odd games and enjoy their enthusiasm. Pretend you are a monster hunting them, chasing them around or playing hide and seek, or pretend that you bumper cars zooming around. It might seem silly but is the sort of thing that children love to play.
