Halloween Is The Perfect Excuse For A Party

Halloween has become one of the most popular special occasions of the year. In fact, some people rank it as their number one, all-time favorite. This may come as a bit of a surprise, but there are many reasons for its special appeal.

My personal votes add up to these. Halloween is relatively spontaneous, with no big buildup, no tension, and no gifts. It's just about having fun, hanging out with your friends, your kids, and your dog, enjoying the night as the pillowcases fill with treats. It's also a great excuse to have really awesome party.

Another favorite perk, to my mind at least, is checking out the neighbors landscaping and flowers, enjoying the creativity of the carved pumpkins, and catching snatches of decorating ideas as front doors fling open to cries of "trick or treat".

Some folks choose to have a party for their kids instead of flying around from house to house. This is a great idea in rural areas and sure beats trick or treating by car. It's also a fine solution for folks in urban areas that might pose a safety risk due to high volumes of traffic.

Why not extend this special time by devising a party, in addition to the door to door stampede, on another night. Adults and kids can dress up and have a great time enjoying spooky games, scary food, and listening to ghoulish music. Then, with the kids off to bed, the adults can talk, dance, and perhaps pop in a recent Halloween flick, or a classic nail-biter from yesteryear.

It's probably a good idea to let your friends know about your party at least a couple of weeks ahead, so they can clear their schedules, and begin assembling the perfect costume. Invitations in the mail are a charming and classy idea, but for speed and instant response, emails might be the way to go.

Couples might want to pretend they're John and Yoko, Lucy and Desi, Fred and Wilma, or even the front end and back end of a dragon, or some other beast. Kids can come as their favorite superhero, cartoon character, Disney creation, or singing sensation. Last year there were Hannah Montanas everywhere.

Of course, if you're pressed for time it's always cool to improvise by rummaging through your closet. Why not wear that old wedding dress, or simply pull on a pair of pyjamas and stick some curlers in your hair? Some budding teens just wear their everyday clothes, mess up their hair and completely change their appearance with a full head mask that you can pick up at practically any store.

Then there's the creative grandma who searches for that old Simplicity pattern, carefully chooses just the right fabric and trims, sits down at the old Singer and "runs up" an adorable lion, pirate, ninja, or cuddly teddy bear.

Halloween is a fantastic change of pace that comes when October is almost done, when there's a nip in the air, when the trees are turning to shades of orange and red, and we can all become whatever we want to be.
