Guide to Car Insurance

In 1930 the law changed to make sure that anyone driving a vehicle in the UK has insurance. Insurance is not only there to replace or repair your car if it is damaged or stolen, but is also to make sure that you can pay for any damage you cause.

The law requires that you have at least third party insurance, to pay for the costs of repairing any damage you cause to someone else's property or if they need medical treatment or compensation for injuries that you cause them. Your own vehicle and medical expenses are not included.

The three most common levels of car insurance are third party, third party fire and theft, and fully comprehensive. Third party, fire and theft policies protect you against financial losses if you cause damage or injury to anything or anyone else, but also if your own vehicle is stolen or damaged by fire.

Fully comprehensive car insurance gives all of the above, plus cover for the cost of repairing your vehicle if you have an accident, even if it is your fault. Your medical expenses will be covered and you may get compensation if your injuries are severe.

More expensive policies will include extra cover for the items in your car like laptops and golf clubs, and will pay you the costs of a hire car while yours is repaired or replaced because of fire, theft, vandalism or an accident.

The more you pay for your policy the greater the level of cover you will receive. However, if the car you drive is only worth a few hundred pounds, you may feel that an expensive fully comprehensive policy that costs you more than the car is worth is a waste of money.

If you are considered to be high risk, either because of your age, previous driving convictions, occupation or choice of vehicle, then expect to pay more for your car insurance. It is worth shopping around because with so many companies vying for your business there are great deals to be found.

However, do not just go for the cheapest possible policy without checking the terms and conditions. It is a false economy to leave yourself financially vulnerable for the sake of a small saving, because if you are unlucky enough to need to claim, you will appreciate a company that is easy to contact and a policy that prevents a minor accident from becoming a major headache.
