Note, that the following principles apply to any other content you write: web pages, articles, blog posts, tweets, Facebook posts...

Here are a couple of tips for keyword page optimization:

Relevancy

If you want Google to show your page in top ten search results, think like Google. For them the user experience is the king.

Make sure that the reader gets a value from the article, make it relevant, to the point.

Start with a headline - use your keyword as the first word in the headline and make it compelling. Make a big promise in the headline and fulfill it in the article.

Make it simple

There are many gurus making the keyword optimization very complicated. However, the main principles are the same: make your web page about that one keyword.

What that means? Use the keyword in the headline, in the first paragraph, somewhere in the text and in the last paragraph if possible. Make sure you use your keyword at least in the headline and the first paragraph.

Do not overstuff your content with the keyword. The good rule of thumb is to use the keyword once every 100 words. That is approximately 1% keyword density.

Related keywords

It is sometimes hard to write the article and use the selected keyword over and over again. It is good to use the related keywords instead. Search on Google for your keyword, and then look at the bottom of the page results page.

You will see 'Searches related to' section, where you can find the keywords related to your keyword that can help you write your content.

Tags

The slightly technical part of writing a content is to insert your keywords into the page where they are not visible to the user. These parts are (meta) tags, like description tag, keyword tag, title tag.

These tags are used by search engines to understand your content better. That means that search engines have more information about your content than your visitor, thus they have different 'experience'.

That might lead to irrelevant search results for the visitor, thus compromising the relevancy of your content. The best rule is to write for the reader first, not for the search engines.

So how not to confuse the search engines? Simply use the content from the article to fill out the tag information. Do not overcomplicate things.

Some systems (like WordPress) fill those tags automatically from your content. However, it is always good to check if your keyword is the first word in every tag.

Use related keywords in the keyword tag. Add more information to the description tag, and also add additional related keywords as well.

Keyword research

As always, the first step before you create your web pages is to research your market and make a list of relevant keywords for your product or service.

Once you have your list of good keywords, all your activity is focused on writing the content.
