Gran Canaria In Summer

Just like its close neighbours in the Canaries like Fuerteventura and Tenerife, the economy on Gran Canaria has developed primarily because of the fine local weather and that means a thriving agricultural sector growing crops that are only feasible during certain limited periods of the year elsewhere and also a well-established tourism sector. Travellers have been visiting Gran Canaria in large numbers since the late sixties, early seventies, actually ever since cheap flights meant that more people could afford to fly abroad for holidays and the price of journeys to places like the Gran Canaria became affordable, even as a second holiday during the winter. In fact a winter sun trip to the Canaries would usually be significantly cheaper that an equivalent length break in a European skiing resort.

Gran Canaria finds its niche during the winter as one of only a few European locations that can offer reliable weather in the months before summer starts. It benefits from a unique location far south of the European mainland and although the islands in the Canaries are Spanish, they are much nearer to North Africa, whose climate they share. That proximity to Africa also dictates their summer weather too, which again restricts the chance of rain, hours of sunshine are many and temperatures rarely drop below 20 Celsius. For many though the surprise is that they are not too high and unlike some places like Egypt, where peak summer days often become almost unbearable, Gran Canaria is kept cool by Atlantic breezes, creating an altogether more comfortable environment.

Sporting pursuits and cultural events are also influence tourists to favour Gran Canaria. The local authorities organise a seemingly endless stream of traditional cultural events like town fairs and carnivals in addition to other artistic promotions like concerts, festivals and art exhibitions. This year some of the planned events include a craft festival during July and a Latin Music week, also in July. There are also plays, painting competitions and special activities for children.

Sporting and leisure activities are also popular, both with local residents and visitors. During the winter months these are generally designed to provide winter training opportunities for runners, swimmers and cyclists, but come the summer the waters around the island become packed with colourful windsurfers, divers, sailors and kite surfers.

For those who enjoy walking and hiking, Gran Canaria has some very attractive countryside. The mountain areas places like the Roque Noblo, a mountain area that gives the island its national symbol, the pine forests of the Tamadaba region and the La Sorrueda, a popular place for climbers.

For cyclists, Gran Canaria boasts a quiet, well surfaced road network which provides flat highways around the coastal fringes and routes that head skywards in the mountains for the more ambitious riders.

But for many, summer in Gran Canaria is all about the beaches and the island is proud to tell everyone that there are 128 of these dotted all around the coastline. Theses beaches range from tiny strips to long sweeps from stoney or rocky secluded coves to wide manicured strips of imported golden sand especially around the main resort areas. Surfers look for the more exposed beaches where the winds can whip up a challenging surf, while families will prefer many of the safer, managed beaches like Maspalomas, considered by many to be the finest beach on the island. The sand dunes to the sde of the main beach are very interesting, mimicing the real Sahara just across the water and often amazingly beautiful especially with the colourful glow of an evening sunset to set them off.
