Gourmet Food Versus Convenience Food - The Festive Nuts Are Loose!

It can be said that gourmet food sets apart those who eat to live, and those who live to eat. In our day to day lives it is easy to demote the value of good food, seeing it as a mere convenience, fuel by which we are able to continue our work. But there is a danger that convenience food can become the norm, with our taste buds eventually accepting this standard, even anticipating it. But in doing so we are short changing ourselves.

Slopping a few gallons of standard fuel into our cars is a convenience, helping us get to work and back. But have you ever tried the higher grade fuel? Yes, it's more expensive, and for that reason it may be seen as less convenient, and our journeys less deserving of such lavish extravagance. Yet by never trying it, you never know what you're missing. Eventually it becomes a habit, completely unjustifiable, because it's impossible to dismiss a luxury as being unnecessary when it has never been experienced.

There are always good reasons why luxury items, gourmet foods and designer products carry the reputations they do. They're earned, and not by those who dismiss them out of hand, but by those who take the trouble to enjoy a little luxury now and again.

Of course, the definition of a luxury is an item or experience which is of a higher value or higher level of quality than the standard. Yet in order for something to be classed as a luxury, it has to be experienced from time to time, otherwise it isn't merely a higher standard than the norm - it's an ignored standard which becomes increasingly irrelevant in our everyday lives.

Gourmet food is that food which has a reputation for fine quality, excellent tastes, the finest ingredients and the best recipes. Admittedly our daily lives often leave little time to thoroughly savour the delights of fine wines, gourmet food or luxury food gifts. But there must come a time every once in a while when we need to break out of our convenient, slapdash tinned microwaveable routines and remind ourselves that this is not what food has to always be about. Simply eating to survive is not living life to the full.

With the festive season rapidly approaching, perhaps it's time to consider the benefits of gourmet food, either as ingredients for your own cooking, for those times when you're entertaining family or friends, or even perhaps as a gift to someone you know whose life has become so convenient they've forgotten what it was they were trying to save time to experience.

Perhaps you know someone who enjoys cooking, and takes pride in preparing meals for other people. Any good cook knows that their meals and their recipes are only ever as good as the ingredients used. Gourmet food is very much about the ingredients used, and it is essential that for food to be classed as a luxury the ingredients are first class. Gourmet food ingredients could make a great deal of difference, and for those who enjoy cooking, a gourmet food gift may well provide a welcome change from the standard supermarket fair that they may well have become too accustomed to shoving in the trolley.

That is largely the trouble today, with many of us heading out to the same shops, buying the same products, even without thinking. To take the time to venture into new pastures, exploring new opportunities and experiencing new flavours, or at least a new level of taste can make a huge difference. We're not saying that there is anything wrong with convenience - it's very, convenient. But there is a time and a place for convenience, and when it become the norm, and we expect little else, or even start to believe we don't deserve anything more, then it is a sad day for our taste buds.

This season, why not leave the packets of supermarket mixed nuts on the shelf and instead try some French chocolate coated walnuts or French Marrons Glaces & Creme de Marrons. Your high street pate might have served well as a convenience, but the festive season shouldn't be about convenience - it's a time to celebrate all that is good, and offering your family and friends gourmet French pates such as hare terrine, traditional French wild boar pate or goose, duck and pork rillettes will really wake up their taste buds.

From French food to Mediterranean fair, and from Italian delicacies to Greek foods, gourmet food offers a world of choices, and an array of taste experiences which help to remind us all that everyday convenience is one thing, but it should never become the standard to which our taste buds are tied for life. This season, give someone you know a gift of gourmet food and remind them that just once in a while it's good to live to eat.
