Gourmet Food And The Battle Against Average Convenience

The trouble with gourmet food, so many people assume, is that it's not for them. Gourmet food and the finer culinary delicacies are for other people, the food critics and those with a penchant for the extravagant.

Yet whilst this attitude might be appropriate when it comes to fast supercars, rambling mansions or designer clothing, gourmet food is a luxury that needn't break the bank. We all need to eat, but sadly these days many of us have got very used to just eating to live, with less and less interest in really enjoying the food, and taking additional pride in it.

Perhaps one reason why this is the case is the recession, which has resulted in many families having to pull the belt in a bit tighter. Certainly when the pennies start to feel rather light in the pocket and the bills mount up, one of the first ways in which families try to save a little is in the food they buy. Yet extraordinarily a great deal of money can often be wasted through buying pre-packaged food, or relying on supermarket produce.

Supermarkets are fine, and they definitely provide a level of convenience for most of us. But the average supermarket will sell average products. Naturally they will cater for the masses, and the masses tend to go for average food, simply because so many people are in the situation of having to be a little more careful with their grocery budget. If we are not careful what can eventually happen is that our taste buds become acclimatised to average tasting food, and expect nothing more.

Indeed, the acclimatisation of our taste buds can be so complete that we can start to lose the ability to distinguish more subtle flavours and tones within the food we cook and eat. To lose the passion for the flavour and taste of food is terrible. The wealth of cookery programmes on television, and the rise in the number of people who are preparing and cooking food at home rather than buying pre packaged food or getting takeaway would suggest that we are more conscious of what we eat.

But whilst this may certainly be true, the ingredients remain little more than average. Average ingredients can only really result in average tasting food. It takes relatively little in many cases to lift an average meal to a heightened level, and it is important to do this when we can.

Gourmet food is that food which has been created using the finest ingredients and using the most time honoured techniques to create culinary delights which are truly exceptional. Gourmet food does not have to be expensive, and no one is suggesting that we all live on gourmet food every day.

The difference is enough, giving our taste buds the opportunity to enjoy and savour something truly special. It's a little like spending twenty years driving your old car around town and then once in a while heading off to the race track to do a few laps in a Ferrari. It's not something that suits everyday living, nor could it generally be maintained, but it's an experience which reminds us that our normal, average expectations are just exactly that. If we start seeing average as all there is, then we lose the ability to distinguish between gourmet food and what we might otherwise eat, which means that we are losing out on taste experiences which should transport us far away from our daily culinary expectations.

Gourmet food and French food must always be created using the finest ingredients, and by purchasing one or two of these, such as goose fat, we can make a big difference to our meals. If you like roast potatoes on a Sunday, then using goose fat instead of your usual oils or fats will wake up your senses to a whole new level of roasties!

If you enjoy cooking, or you know someone who does, then sourcing a few gourmet ingredients could well help make a world of difference. From ingredients to snacks, and even whole meals, gourmet food and French food is available in a wide range of types, meaning that there is certainly something to suit everyone. But the one thing that should not suit our taste buds too comfortably is anything that can be declared merely average. Gourmet food is not for the elite - it's for anyone who has taste buds in need of a little excitement.
