Coffee consumption stays stable, announces survey
During its 99th yearly Conventon held in Dana Point, California on March 18-20, the nation's Coffee organisation disclosed the first results of the 2010 National Coffee Drinking Trends market-research survey which may be released later in spring.
According the yearly survey , that has been conducted by the nation's Coffee organisation since the 1950s, coffee consumption in the USA stayed stable this year despite the recession, though clients increasingly chose to brew the libation at home.
The info was assembled in an online survey of 3,000 people conducted in Jan and February.
56 percent of adults aged eighteen and older consumed coffee during the past day, unvaried from 2009 and 2008, the survey found.
Coffee consumption during the past week stayed on par with the 2009 and 2008 figures as well , at 68 p.c.
"Despite the recession and the requirement for purchasers to alter their purchasing activities, their daily coffee has demonstrated to be a non-negotiable, as demonstrated by unchanging coffee consumption over recent years," announced Robert F. Nelson, NCA president and Boss.
Though consumption stayed steady, more consumers chose to brew coffee at home.
In 2010, 86 % of those people that drank coffee during the past day had prepared it at home, up four % points from last year. Only 26 p.c of past-day coffee drinkers consumed coffee prepared away from home, down from 31 p.c last year.
buyers are also demanding better quality coffee, Nca announced, with survey results showing 40 p.c of the coffee consumed is now gourmet.
talking on the sidelines of the event, Juan Lucas Restrepo, the head of selling of state Federation of Coffee Growers ( Fedecafe ) claimed Colombia's coffee output will jump 41 p.c this year thanks to a combination of perfect weather and adequate fertilizer use.
Output will return to 11,000,000 bags, from last year's 7.8 million bags.
thanks to a weakening of El Nino phenomenon, coffee regions had higher temperatures, daylight and a favourable amount of rain to plantations in Colombia, while higher manure use will reach 300,000 metric tons this year, up from the ten year average of 250,000 tons.
From December to March, we've seen fantastic blossoming across Colombia, doubtless the best blossoming in 10 years, Restrepo said. In April, we'll be registering a significantly higher output than last year. May and June also will be miles better than last year.

Ecx sets the example
Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia and Uganda are considering replicating the model of the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange ( Ecx ), the nations's first commodity exchange established in 2008.
Jointly owned by its members and the Ethiopian central authority, Ecx now offers a secure, low cost platform for farmers to trade rural products like coffee, sesame, haricot beans, maize in an otherwise tradition-bound system suffering from abnormally high exchange risks and costs.
The exchange guarantees the integrity of the products traded, quickly and reliably propagating market price movements to all traders, according to the UN's development agency Undp, which concludes the Ecx project has been a hit.
as well as creating a physical and electronic dealing platform and market information system, Ecx performs warehouse management and quality documentation. It also guarantees payment against delivery, solving any commercial disputes through a fair and professional settlement system.
The exchange has handled transactions worth US$ 240 million since December 2008, adding up to over 160,000 tons of coffee beans. A projected 850,000 small-holding farmers mostly producers of coffee, sesame and other cash crops are now involved in the Ecx system.
