Getting Yourself to Exercise

Most people know exercise is important. But, lots of people still don't do it. Being physically fit gives more than physical benefits. You will be healthier. The risk for heart disease is lowered, and it is the most effective way to bring down blood glucose levels. Sadly, we've all become so used to doing most of what we do from a chair that it becomes increasingly difficult to change habits enough to become physically fit.

One of the most interesting things about exercise is the more you do, the more energy you feel. It seems backwards. Exercise should make you tired and feel like sitting around for the rest of the day. But, that's not the case at all. In fact, an unhealthy diet coupled with a sedentary lifestyle is a recipe for feeling sluggish, while eating healthy and exercising will make you feel like doing more.

But, how do we get from knowing how important it is to exercise to actually doing it and changing our lifestyles? It's actually pretty simple, but requires a plan. First, you have to know what you like and don't like. Don't make the mistake of finding a fitness program in a magazine that works for someone else and try to force yourself into it. You'll need to choose activities that are fun for you.

You may feel that the words exercise and fun do not belong together. But, as you become more active, you will eventually look forward to your exercise program and you'll find yourself having fun. At that point, you'll realize you've become one of the weirdos who equate fun with things that seem like work, but you won't care. You'll feel so great and energized all the time that you'll never want to go back.

So, go slow to start off. Pick an activity that at least you don't dread. If you're having trouble thinking of something, it might be a good idea to look into a fitness center. They'll have tons of equipment you can try out and see what you like. You may enjoy cycling, walking, jogging, climbing stairs, or you might be more interested in one of the aerobic classes offered. If none of those activities sound good, you may find that you'd like to do a sport. Get some friends together and play basketball, soccer, or tennis. In the end, it really doesn't matter what you do, just get out and move around and break a sweat. As time goes on, increase your intensity and the length of your exercise. Change it up from time to time too. Try different sports or activities. Keep it fun and concentrate on how good you feel after you've done it. Then, you'll look forward to your exercise and can lose the guilt of knowing you "should" be doing something, because you ARE doing something.
