A lot of the confusion that happens in online printing comes from the fact that most us do not really know the ins and outs of our images and printing designs. We use our digital cameras, and that publishing software at home to create nice layouts, but when we finally turn them to the online printing service we unfortunately discover that our settings are wrong. One of the more common settings that some people do not understand are the pixel resolutions. For online printing, the image resolution is crucial in the designs since the whole printing process usually happens digitally. This means that any shortcomings in your design resolution will result in square or dot pixels appearing in the prints.

To prevent this from happening, you have to know the facts about your resolution settings, in your image, your camera and your printer. Below is a little primer that should really help you out in this.

DPI's – The DPI or “dots per inch” is a term primarily used for the printer resolution. This setting defines the amount of color ink dots that are placed per inch of line in a print out. The higher the number of DPIs in online printing, the better quality printouts are produced. Most digital printers nowadays use DPIs of around 1000-5000 dpi for printing. These settings are already enough to get photo-realistic images in any kind of photo or paper stocks that are available today.

PPI's – The PPI on the other hand means “pixels per inch”. This is a function of resolution for digital images themselves. Basically a pixel is a unit of measure, much like a dot is for the printers. Higher PPI's means larger resolutions with bigger images and better image quality. Of course, higher image resolutions also mean bigger file sizes for your images. A PPI of 72 is already apt for web images, since they require faster loading times and a smaller file size. However for full quality printouts you may need to give out a higher resolution image which have bigger file sizes. Typically, people use 300ppi as the industry standard for online printing. This is happened because using web images of 72ppi in your color printers, usually produces fuzzy images that are not pleasing to the eye. So if you are planning to printout a nice little poster or postcard, remember to keep your designs at around 300ppi so ensure its quality.

Megapixels – Lastly we have the megapixels. A megapixel contains one million digital pixels for an image. This term is usually used for digital cameras. Digital cameras that have a high megapixel rating means that it can capture better and clearer images from it. When those images get downloaded to the computer, usually the image resolution from digital cameras with high megepixel ratings balloon to thousands of pixels per inch. In most cases, when you send a raw file like this to an online printer, the photo quality would be truly excellent.

So those are the major points that you need know about printing resolutions. Once you correspond with your online printing service, you should already understand why they try to emphasize to you the importance of image resolutions. It makes printing far better with high qualities especially if your printer, camera and image resolution settings are more or less within the same levels.

So that is the primer on image resolutions. Hopefully this should help you a lot as you talk to your new online printing service. Always remember to set an image with a highest possible resolution to make sure that your prints will appear as good as possible.
