Four simple tests are all that is needed for some people to save themselves from years of pain and to get fast relief from TMJ related pain.

The real cause of TMJ pain is a structural problem that is often misdiagnosed as something else. As a result, many people suffer needlessly in pain for years.

For someone to determine if they have a TMJ disorder all they need to do is visit a TMJ dentist. Many of these types of dentists can perform a joint vibrational analysis, a jaw tracker analysis, an electromyography analysis and a tomographic x-ray test.

There are two reasons why fewer people get these tests than should. The first is that TMJ syndrome is very complex and the second is that not many people even know there are dentists known as TMJ dentists (or neuromuscular dentists).

Essentially, a TMJ disorder is caused by a misaligned jaw. When a jaw is misaligned the many nerves, ligaments and muscles in and around the jaw become strained. This straining can result in an inflammation of these soft tissues. It is this inflammation which causes the pain.

What is not often diagnosed though is the fact that pain in a location far away from the jaw may still be because soft tissues in those remote areas are ultimately connected to the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) and jaw. Headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, ringing in the ears and tingling hands are a few of the TMJ symptoms that are often not diagnosed as being related to a TMJ disorder.

The first step in getting TMJ relief is to get a proper diagnosis. The second step is to find someone with the training, expertise and equipment who can determine, once and for all, whether the cause of someone’s pain is due to TMJ syndrome.

A TMJ dentist invests years in post-graduate studies to be able to successfully diagnose and then treat TMJ problems as well as sleep apnea problems.

After asking detailed questions about the history of a TMJ patient and doing some preliminary tests, a TMJ dentist can then use four specialized pieces of high-tech equipment to determine if there is a problem with the jaw, the degree of the problem, and whether his TMJ dental treatment can be of help.

The four tests to ask a TMJ dentist to provide are as follows:

1. Joint Vibrational Analysis

This test is designed to detect any vibration in the jaw joint while it is being opened or closed because a normal joint should not make any noise when being moved in this manner. This equipment will also perform the important task of detecting any damage to the soft tissues in the jaw joint.

2. Jaw Tracker Analysis

Once it is determined there is a strong likelihood of a TMJ disorder, the jaw tracker determines the extent of the damage. This is done by evaluating how straight the jaw is opened and closed and also the speed at which the jaw is opened and closed.

3. Electromyography Analysis

The degree of damage in the jaw joint is also evaluated with the use of electromyography analysis which is designed to assess the level of tension created in the muscles of the jaw.

4. Tomographic X-Ray Test

A complex motion tomography x-ray machine provides a very different x-ray than a regular x-ray. It can be very beneficial to find a TMJ dentist with a tomographic x-ray machine because it helps the dentist visualize the jaw joint and determine the alignment of the jaw.

Once these four diagnostic tests have been performed a TMJ dentist will not only know if a patient has a TMJ disorder but the dentist will also know what type of TMJ treatment is required in order to provide quick relief from TMJ pain.
