GRP door surrounds are probably one of the easiest ways to add style and elegance to the outside of your home, and to significantly increase its value too. There are several benefits from having door surrounds fitted to your home, and in particular having door surrounds manufactured from GRP, otherwise known as Glass Reinforced Polyester. In this article we're going to look at some of the specific benefits of having a door surround or pilasters fitted to your home, and why GRP in particular represents the best material to use.

Your front door is almost certainly one of the first things which anyone seeing your home will notice. Whether that happens to be yourself arriving home, friends and family coming to visit, or even prospective buyers, your front door is the first thing people tend to notice. Of course, as they stand ready to enter your home, the front door is about the only thing they'll notice. It therefore makes a good deal of sense to make sure that your front door gives a good impression of your home. It's your chance to make a statement about how you value your home, about your style and attention to detail, and about how you make your home unique.

Door surrounds are certainly one very easy and affordable way of achieving this goal, helping your front door look particularly welcome and inviting, and your home look stylish, and even larger. You may be surprised but by simply adding a GRP door surround to your front door your home will actually appear larger.

Many people aren't always aware of this until afterwards, but by placing door surrounds around front doors, the doorway itself seems very much bigger. This then results in a form of optical illusion, since the eye and brain naturally tends to enlarge the overall dimensions of the rest of the house accordingly. This is a great way of making your home seem large, welcoming - and worth every penny you're asking for it if it happens to be on the market!

You can think of it a little like being a frame around a picture. It's highly unlikely that you'd buy a painting, only to stick it on a wall as it is. You'd probably carefully choose a frame that compliments the style of painting. The same is true with your front door - the centre piece of the exterior of your home. Door surrounds work in a similar way to picture frames, setting off your door in a more attractive way, complimenting and reinforcing the style of your home, and offering a level of protection too.

This is an aspect often people don't even consider, since GRP door surrounds are not more than a few inches in depth. Yet those few inches can make a lot of difference, helping to keep the elements off your door. The rain, and windswept dust and debris that normally covers your front door in a layer of unpleasant grime will be reduced significantly thanks to the presence of a door surround. Although the door surround may need an occasional clean, the visual impression people will get is of a clean door, and there will be less chance of the grime and dirt transferring from the door to people's coats and bags as they walk into your home.

Maintenance and cleaning is an issue which needs to be addressed. Obviously having anything attached to the exterior of your home will result in a certain level of additional cleaning. However, with glass reinforced polyester this maintenance and cleaning amounts to very little. If you have previously had, or seen, door surrounds made from timber or stone then you will be aware of the long term care and expense required in keeping them in good condition.

Timber will need regular treatment, varnishing and painting, and if it does begin to crack, warp or split it will need immediate attention, otherwise the door surround could become unstable. Stone requires very expensive maintenance if it begins to crack or chip.

Glass reinforced polyester, or GRP door surrounds are entirely waterproof, and will be able to withstand the elements without any trouble. Indeed. GRP was used by the RAF to construct the shell of many airplanes, and also by the Navy for the hulls of several types of boat. If glass reinforced polyester can cope with those conditions, then a little traditional British weather should be no problem! All your door surround will need is an occasional wipe with a damp cloth to make it look as good as new.

As an affordable, quick and easy way to add style to your home, increase both the value and apparent size of your home, and help increase the chance of a successful sale, door surrounds made from glass reinforced polyester represent an ideal solution.
