Golf rounds are frequently won or lost in the "short game." You will be aware that the short game is all about golf chipping and pitching. Should you really want to do well in golf, you need to master the art of chipping. A golf chip is completely different from a pitch; pitching puts the golf ball into a higher trajectory and is accomplished with a wedge. Golf chipping comes into play when you're around 30 to 50 feet away from the green.

A bad chip is what occurs when you hit the golf ball too high or too low. One possible result is a "fat" chip (also known as a "chucker") that goes absolutely nowhere. Or you may end up with a "thin" chip (also known as a "skull") that goes shooting across the green, giving you an excellent opportunity to chip from the other side.

Successful golf chipping requires that you hit the ball first, not the ground. Some golfers describe it as "squeezing" the ball between the club head and the grass. Getting enough acceleration into your golf chipping swing is difficult to achieve. The most common worry that players have when chipping is hitting the golf ball too far. Slowing down the golf swing is often an unconscious result. Slowing down is precisely what you don't want to do. To maintain your acceleration without overshooting the green, take a shorter backswing. As a general rule, your chipping backswing should be from a quarter to a half of your normal backswing.

Strangely, there's no universal consensus about which club is best for golf chipping. In the end, the best club for you is that which you personally prefer, the one with which you are able to control the spin better, and the one that gives you better overall precision. Try out each of your clubs to find one that seems to work the best for you. Afterwards spend all your time practicing with that club. A majority of golfers believe that it's preferable to master one club and control the flight of the golf ball by adjusting your backswing. That way you don't have to become proficient with four or five clubs and then choose the correct one based on distance.

Your stance for chipping should be narrower than your normal stance. Stand nearer to the golf ball and grip the club farther down the shaft. The ball should be back in your stance to help you hit the ball more solidly.

Golf chipping should be about low flight trajectories and lots of rolling. Most golf chipping situations don't require a lofted flight. The only occasion that you actually need lift when you're chipping is if there's an obstacle in your way that you need to get over like high grass or a bunker. Otherwise, get the golf ball onto the green as soon as possible and let it roll.

A winning short game is largely based on feel, which can only be effectively learned with regular practice. A proven way you can find out which club chips best for you is to practice with them all. Getting the best physical form comes next. There's really no need to go to the practice range. Set up a target in your back yard and then practice chipping the golf ball into that spot and notice how your ability picks up.
