Fun days out for the family at Montego Bay

Jamaica has 14 parishes in total, and Montego Bay is the capital of one of them, St. James Parish. Montego Bay is the second largest city in Jamaica, which was discovered in 1494 by Christopher Columbus. On his arrival he called it Fair Weather Bay, and it remains part of the British Commonwealth.

Climb alongside the beautiful waterfalls of Dunns River, and take a swim with the local dolphins on a trip to Ocho Rios. Travel agents and local tour operators arrange day trips to this popular Montego Bay destination, where there are also plenty of independent shops and stalls selling food, local crafts, clothing and more.

Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville on Gloucester Avenue is a popular destination for families. A restaurant, bar and play park in one, traditional Jamaican meals are served, regular entertainment takes place and there are waterslides and a hot tub to enjoy too.

A wonderful day trip with glorious views out over the Bay and the Catadupa Mountains can be had at Croydon on the Mountains. This is a working coffee and fruit plantation and day trips include a delicious barbequed lunch, sampling of their fine Jamaican coffee as well as tasting of the exotic fruits and fruit juices produced here.

A wealth of equestrian activities is available at the Rocky Point Stables at Half Moon. As well as riding lessons, the Stables organise exciting trail rides that let you explore the countryside on horseback, including swimming with your horse as part of a beach ride. There are polo games, horse jumping lessons and carriage rides too.

The Luminous Lagoon - located at Rock, just out of Falmouth, the Luminous Lagoon promises a night swimming adventure unlike any other. The phosphorescence produced in the waters in and around the lagoon means that when you swim and manipulate the water, the water around you glows beautifully.

If you are looking for some evening entertainment suitable for all the family, then head to New Kingston where you will find the Centerstage Theatre. Located on Dominica Drive, they host regular musical performances in patois as well as music concerts and theatre performances too.

Montego Bay Beaches - its coastal location means that you are spoiled for choice when it comes to beach destinations in Montego Bay. The busiest tend to by the Walter Fletch, Cornwall and Doctors Cave Beaches, where there are watersports facilities, cheap sun loungers to rent, and a range of fun family activities and eateries.
