Memory foam is made from visco elastic polyurethane foam and has a few distinctive traits. Snoozing on a full memory foam mattress causes it to mold to the body, but it will afterward go back to its original shape, hence the designation memory foam. NASA first made it approximately 40 years ago, but as manufacturing costs decreased it became available to the general population in the early 1990s. Ever since then it has been very popular.

The memory foam topper was the first product introduced to the public, but it did not take long before the full memory foam mattress was taking the bedding industry by storm. Due to its uniqueness it became a best selling product. As sales grew additional products were introduced. Today, there are so many products for sale the consumer can easily get perplexed trying to figure out the type that will be ideal for them. We also have the latex mattress which only adds to the confusion. A buyer has to study some foam and latex mattress reviews to learn the dissimilarities.

The majority of the confusion with memory foam is due to the many densities and levels of firmness that are available. Density is the weight in pounds of a 1 cubic foot section of foam. If a 1 cubic foot section weighs 5 pounds its density is also 5 pounds. In general, if the foam is denser it will last longer, but it will not be as soft.

Firmness is a measure of its Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) and is the amount of power in pounds it takes to produce a 1 inch indentation in the foam. Measuring ILD is accomplished by taking a 50-inch disc and positioning it on a piece of foam that is 4x15x15 inches. The amount of weight in pounds it takes to push the foam down 1 inch is its ILD rating or score. If it requires 14 pounds of pressure to push the foam down one inch its ILD rating is 14. Bedding with a lower-numbered ILD rating is softer and will indent more.

Sleeping on a regular spring mattress will cause more force on certain areas such as the shoulders and hips. Memory foam mattresses will disperse the body weight of a person more uniformly and over a bigger area. This will decrease the degree of weight in any specific area which can result in a more relaxing siesta and less back or joint pain.

One of the negative aspects to this type of mattress is its high price as they can be very costly. This is one reason why the memory foam mattress topper is so well-liked, because it is a lot less expensive than a full-sized mattress and can be put on top of your bed you already sleep on. However, due to their thinness they can wear out sooner. If you are not sure you want to spend the additional money to pay for a full memory foam mattress you can initially start with the topper to see if it agrees with you. If you sleep better with the topper you can always take the next step and purchase the foam mattress.

Memory foam retains heat and is why some individuals do not want it. When somebody sleeps on a foam mattress it will initially feel firm. Afterward, once the heat from the body is transferred to the foam it will start to soften, causing it to mold to the individual's body shape. The foam underneath the warmth will remain cooler and less soft, offering ideal support, while the warmer foam will be softer and less stiff, providing more comfort. Lots of people with back soreness will find that their pain improves due to snoozing on a full memory foam mattress.
