Which would you prefer, traditional French food and cuisine, or a plate of overcooked brussel sprouts? French gourmet food has a lasting reputation as being amongst the best dishes in the world, yet at the very time of year when we look to treat ourselves and others, we often resort to a plate of boiled potatoes, dry turkey and brussel spouts! This Christmas, why not consider either introducing a little French food into the winter feasts, or perhaps give someone you know a gift of gourmet food, such as goose foie gras, some artisanal French jams or perhaps some fine French cheese.

The trouble is that for most of the past year the majority of us have been tightening the belt more and more as finances have been struck blow after blow. Although the economical picture is slowly recovering, our belts remain rigidly constrictive. Christmas and the winter season is traditionally a time for celebration, for loosening the belt, and reminding ourselves that no matter how tough the year has been, no matter how dark the days, there is still much to enjoy. It is typically a time for indulgence - both self indulgence and encouraging the indulgence of others.

But indulging ourselves, our families and our friends in little more than a plate of dry meat and vegetables, a bowl of peanuts from the supermarket, or a tin of factory produced chocolates, is hardly the level of gastronomic pleasure which we all deserve. French food has a reputation for being exquisitely delicious, and with a range of gourmet foods and treats available, it’s worth reminding ourselves that it isn’t all doom and gloom.

From treats and gifts of gourmet food such as traditional French cheeses, wines and items such as duck confit, Dijon mustard, truffled goose foie gras or French sauces, to dishes that can be served to your family and guests such as duck cassoulet and Perard fish soup, this winter could be one to really lift the spirits and not just the ones that come from bottles.

Imagine giving a loved one a gift of a box of chocolates from the supermarket, and then imagine the reaction if instead you offered a box of chocolate coated walnuts from Perigord. The difference is enormous, and the reaction is likely to be rather different too! Buying French food and giving gourmet food as gifts demonstrates both an exquisite taste and appreciation of the finer things in life, and also that you have made the effort to be original, shirking the gifts that everyone within five miles of the supermarket will be giving and receiving. Instead, by being original, and offering something of fine taste, you’ll find the rewards as much a gift as the gourmet treats.

If you enjoy cooking during the Christmas period you’ll almost certainly be anxious at this time of year to make sure that everything is just right. No cook can possibly be expected to produce their best without the right ingredients, and since good food is all about having good ingredients to start with, it’s worth bearing in mind the difference that having French food ingredients can have on the meals you serve your family and friends this year. For example. Consider the difference to your cooking that having goose fat or duck fat will make. Perhaps a little French fleur de sel de Guerande, or the much coarser Guerande sea salt. These ingredients will each add something special to a meal, even if it’s one you cook regularly. Adding a touch of gourmet food ingredients to your meals will make a great deal of difference.

Or perhaps you know someone who enjoys cooking. Why not consider giving them a gift wrapped, beautifully presented jar of goose fat, or French fleur de sel de camargue, Dijon mustard, French creme de marrons clement faugier or one of the many beautifully presented and sweet tasting French sauces. If you’re likely to benefit from the resulting meals, perhaps all the better - but anyone who enjoys cooking will certainly appreciate a gift of such fine ingredients.

Of course, it’s easy to assume that fine French food costs a great deal of money, and whilst it’s certainly true that gourmet food will cost more than standard supermarket food, not only are you enjoying a level of culinary delight which far outstrips anything you’re likely to find in your high street, it doesn’t have to cost as much as you might imagine. Good French food uses natural ingredients, and time honoured techniques - healthier, tastier, more pleasurable, and often more economical too. Why not treat someone you know, or even yourself this Christmas, with a gift of French food or a gourmet food ingredients.
