Association football is usually known as just football, but is also identified as soccer, to distinguish it from the completely different game of football, that is all the rage in the United States. Even though soccer is less popular in North America, that great nation has produced plenty of highly skilled soccer players, and some of them have been signed up to play in top competitions such as the English Premier League. Almost inevitably the international status of soccer has not eluded American entrepreneurs, and some of them have invested large sums of money, in several of the best established soccer teams with international reputations.

Although soccer has its roots in the working class, the game is more complex than a recent supporter may think. Simply stated a football game comprises of eleven players who oppose each other on a football ground, measuring about 90 meters long x 45 meters wide. The principle of the game is to score goals using any part of the body but not the hands, but typically the feet or the head. Teams include defenders, half backs, and forwards. A special kind of defender is called the goalkeeper, who may use his hands and arms to save goals.

The game of football is an activity that developed into an enormous business. Exceptionally wealthy individuals, from around the globe, have come to appreciate that soccer can be a great investment. They are aware that it can provide substantial profits from entrance money, television contracts, and selling logo related goods connected with football club activity, including football jerseys and the like. Tabloids appear to have increasingly large segments related to sport, and football news, including match results and reports, league positions, and related issues that must be good for circulation.

The international nature of football is exemplified by the contest highly regarded as the Jules Rimet Trophy. The contest changes location to various parts of the world, and there are preliminaries to go through, before thirty two teams from countries all over the world battle for the trophy, at four yearly intervals, winning or losing, until the final is contested. Apparently, the Jules Rimet Trophy attracts viewers and spectators calculated to be about twice the total, of those that watch the Olympic Games.

It is not easy to work out why international soccer has expanded to be the sports colossus it is today. It is surprising that squads of eleven footballers, passing a ball about for an hour and a half, with a half time break in the middle, get such fervent consideration. Possibly it is because there are young men and occasionally women, in the prime of their lives, who through their skill, provide thrills and spills in a sport with which so many people can identify. In a sense it may be a case of there, by the grace of god, go I!
