Read More About Destinations

Florida is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Located in the South East of the United States, this region attracts many Europeans of all ages due to the warm climate and endless sandy beaches. Florida is a Peninsula, which means that the ocean is located on three out of the four possible sides. The ocean on the left side of Florida is the Gulf of Mexico, to the right is the Atlantic Ocean and south are the Florida Straits. The Capital of Florida is Tallahassee and the largest city is Jacksonville. Miami is a popular city in Florida as it is one of the largest and holds a distinct Latino and liberal element to it.

Climate

Florida is considered the Sunshine State as its temperatures may rise up to 112 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer and during the winter season temperatures may only drop as far as 55 degrees Fahrenheit. These temperatures give the region a humid Sub-Tropical climate except for the southern tip which exhibits a Tropical climate. Florida is different to a lot of regions around the world as it does not experience the four seasons instead has both the rainy and the dry season. The sunny climate and warm seas attract many surfers to the area, especially Tampa beach on the west coast of the peninsula.

The weather is not always perfect for Florida. Central Florida is commonly known as the lightening capital as it experiences more lightening strikes than anywhere else in the region. Afternoon thunderstorms are a common occurrence across the majority of the state from late spring until early autumn but usually clear throughout the day to give evening sunshine.

History

Florida was the first state on American Mainland that European explorers first landed when Ponce de Leon arrived in 1513. The Spanish built settlements here within a period of fifty years, although there was no gold to be found in the area. In 1769 the English took control over Florida in exchange for Cuba, but successfully managed to keep away the interests of the French. Following the war of Independence they Florida reclaimed control. Florida was handed over to the confederation and became the 27th State by the year 1820. Towards the end of the nineteenth Century tourists arrived in large numbers to Florida but began to decline during the depression. Orlando played a big part with the creation of the amusement parks, attracting tourists back into the region and regaining Floridas fortunes. During the 20th Century an influx of Latin American immigrants also substantially added to Floridas character.

Florida offers a wide range of attractions including the famous Orlando theme parks such as Disney World, Seaworld and the EPCOT center.
