Finding the right wedding gift

Trying to get the perfect wedding gift for someone is never going to be easy. If your newlywed friends have already been sharing a house, they are probably going to have most of the kitchenware or bed linen that they''ll need; alternatively, if they''re moving in together, you want to make sure you get something which suits their tastes.

When fretting about what they''re going to like, though, it''s good to remember that they''re almost guaranteed to be happy with whatever it is that you decide to give them. For this reason, it''s probably best just to get something which you think you''d like to be given if you were in the same situation as them, and not to get too stressed about it all.

Once you''ve worked out how much you want to spend, you could find that some household furniture is the best gift. The danger with giving a small or jokey present is that it could end up gathering dust in a box, whereas a nice coffee table or a classy pouf will be used on a daily basis time and time again.

Alternatively, you could go for a nice set of glassware, such as some interesting brandy glasses or whisky tumblers. This could be perfect if the newlyweds are putting together a collection of household implements for the first time, and they''ll probably think of you every time they use those implements you gave them.

Thinking along completely different lines, an equally interesting present could be a painting or print of some sort. In this current economical climate, people are generally spending their money on things that you can hold onto rather than trusting in share figures, and a good buy from an art dealer could not only provide nice decoration but could also be a savvy investment.

In the same vein, a nicely framed photograph of a special occasion you all shared would be perfect on the couple''s wall. Some outlets even offer a service of printing a book with photos provided by you, creating what is effectively a photo album but done on glossy paper rather than put onto card.

If you want your friends to be talking about you well after their honeymoon has finished, perhaps a slightly crazy present is what you want to get them. As long as they are somehow practical, then they''ll go down well: a ceramic chocolate holder, for instance, or an egg cup with an extended area in which to put the shell pieces, could hit that tone just right.

Ultimately, though, a wedding present is going to be appreciated whatever it is or however much it cost. Whether it''s a new blender or just a book, it can only really add to what will be a wonderful and special day.
