International flights do no often come cheap, especially when you are searching for flights further afield, to the USA or Far East. But that does not mean you should accept the first flight price you come across. Follow these steps to cheaper international flights and you might just save yourself a bundle.

It is amazing how much you can save when you can be flexible with your travel dates. Many websites now allow you to search using a flexible-dates option so that you are shown a selection of flights either side of your ideal travel date. Using this option can often reveal bargains to be had, simply by deferring your flight for a further 24 hours.

Look out for air courier positions on flights. This means that you will have to carry an item on your flight on behalf of an airline, so not ideal if you have a lot of luggage to travel with. But you will be rewarded with a heavily discounted ticket. Usually just one ticket will be granted, so ideally you need to be travelling alone to take advantage of this.

You can try searching some airline consolidator sites, as they often have cheaper ticket rates than the airlines themselves. However, to get a good deal here you often have to book at least 3 months in advance.

Do not be fooled into thinking that if you wait until the last minute to book your flights you will get a bargain. This only works if you are purchasing a package holiday, with hotel included in the price. Flights by themselves only increase in cost the closer the departure date you buy.

You could try internet auction sites like eBay for tickets. As a guide, use an online flight price search website, and look for prices for flights departing when you want to travel. Then deduct 20 to 30 per cent from the average ticket price - this amount is a guide to the kind of price you should be offering for tickets on an auction site.

If you do not mind a little extra travel by road or rail then you can try looking for flights to neighbouring cities to your holiday destination. Flights to lesser known airports and cities can sometimes be far cheaper.

Instead of buying flights alone, you may find cheaper deals when you opt to purchase your flights and hotel accommodation together. Try package deal specialists like Thomas Cook who offer discount rates to those who purchase these two holiday essentials together.
