Let's get it out of the way: The best fat burning diet isn't a diet at all. At least, not in the standard way of thinking about a diet. It's not about the fad diet that push no carbs, no sugar, no flour or whatever it might be.

The best fat burning diet is one that that centers on balance. Nothing in it is excessive. It focuses on all the macronutrients in balance, and that's it.

And what nutrients are those? The triple threat of nutrition: Fats, carbs and protein. Combining these in the proper macronutrient ratio can be an enormous help to your weight-loss efforts.

Let's start by talking about fats. There was a low-fat craze in the 1980s, but the best fat burning diet actually needs fat. Our bodies don't produce the essential fatty acids necessary for the body to work correctly.

Don't drop your daily fat intake below 10 percent of your daily calories. Naturally, you're not aiming for a high-fat diet either, the balance is key. Stick to less than 30 percent fat in your daily calories. Aim for a middle point between these two figures, around 20 percent.

Moving on to protein, this makes up part of the remaining 80 percent of your daily food intake. Protein plays a large part in satiating the appetite, has a direct fat burning thermogenic effect and plays a significant part of maintaining and building muscle mass.

To take advantage of these effects, your daily calories should be at least 25 percent. You are free to go above this percentage as there aren't any negative effects. Pro athletes and body builders are well known for eating much more protein. If you eat a higher ratio of protein, you have to eat a lower ratio of carbohydrates.

About 35 percent protein is a great starting point for the best fat burning diet.

Just like fats, carbs have gotten a bad rap in the past decade. In reality, the majority of the best fat burning diet is carbohydrates.

Basic math skills leave us finding that if 35 percent is protein, 20 percent is carbs, then you have 45 percent left for carbohydrates. This is a good ratio because a low-carb diet can leave you sluggish, especially when you're at the gym.

Additionally, it's not a realistic goal to maintain. Excess carbohydrates can lead to excess fat gain and contribute to the rise and fall of blood-sugar levels. Even if you've decided to raise your protein level, don't dip below 30 percent carbohydrates.

Let's recap: 20 percent fat, 35 percent protein and 45 percent carbohydrates equals the best fat burning diet. These aren't really magic numbers, but they are a good starting point for someone treading the waters in macronutrient ratios.

Don't stress out too much about getting the ratio right on. It won't make a huge difference if you're off by a little bit. But the best fat burning diet focuses on balance, and these ratios definitely have balance.
