The history of Faro goes back a long way, even to the Romans who spent time there. While many artefacts, ruins and examples of architecture still remain from these times, a huge earthquake that shook the region 250 years ago took away many of the buildings and monuments. However, luckily a few structures did escape damage, such as the massive walls that were built around the original village that eventually expanded into today's city of Faro. These walls were built over athousand years ago in order to repel invaders.

The main archway that leads through to Faro's Old Town is certainly one of those stunning structures. This arch, known as the Arco da Vila, was built around one thousand years ago and marks the entrance to the Old Town, where you can spend hours exploring tumbling streets and many styles of architecture. Walking through these streets is much like stepping back in time reflecting Faro's 'golden era' of the 16th Century.

Legends and gargoyles are part of the allure of Faro

Not far from the Arco da Vila is the Sé Cathedral, built in the 1300s, partly destroyed in the earthquake thereafter and rebuilt in the 1700s, using a fusion of Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance styles. To see exhibits that date back to Faro's origins, the various museums in the city, in particular the Museu Arqueologico, are full of treasures. Originally a convent, this magnificent building is embellished with gargoyles and houses a huge Roman floor mosaic, a collection of Moorish oil lamps and a very interesting 16th Century Eucharistic safe. The Old Town is also home to many chapels such as the Nossa Senhora do Pé da Cruz. This 17th Century chapel overlooks a picturesque square and holds an amazing configuration of woodcarvings and paintings depicting scenes from the Old Testament. Even with all this amazing history to explore, Faro can also display a more modern side and the restaurants and cafe culture make spending time here a very enjoyable thing to do

In the main square of the Old Town, you will find the remains of a former military barracks. Within the construction it is possible to see an excavated Roman Arch and Moorish foundations. No longer used as a barracks, the building has been converted into a flourishing art gallery, which has found favour with both artists from the region and abroad.

However, even historical holidays in Faro wouldn't be complete without a touch of luxury in which to relax after a hard day's time travelling. Villas in Faro offer the ideal choice for those who want to enjoy their holiday on their own timetable, rather than having to follow the regimes set out by a hotel. You can hire Faro villas in a number of locations that will bring you as close to the Portuguese hustle and bustle as you want or give you pure relaxation and isolation, perhaps watching some wildlife or just the fishing boats at work out on the sea. Despite the fact that Faro is full of ancient charms, the villas themselves are not ancient a, you will find that they are equipped with all the modern luxuries you need to enjoy the best of holidays. Hiring villas in Faro allows you to explore the past while holidaying firmly in the present.
