Families used to live close to the vicinity they were raised in after they were grown. Many extended family members lived close together, a lot of times in the same town or even as neighbors. These days you don’t come across many families that live close. Employment and education have created families that are spread far and wide. While we can stay in touch with email and phone calls, we miss out on the personal interactions. With the busy lives we lead, it becomes hard to preserve close relationships.

Our relationship with our family that lives far from us can be compared to the relationship we have with our long ago family. We know the essentials of their lives. What about the personal stories, the ones that make them real to us?

A link to our relatives, no matter if they live far away or lived long ago, helps us to find our spot in the world. By learning of their daily life and personal tales we can feel a stronger association to them. It is up to us to make sure that these family ties are strong and stay strong, even with our ancestors.

Staying connected with our family that live distant is both easier and difficult than ever before. In our day we are lucky to have so many ways to stay in touch with far-off family. We can email, send videos and make phone calls. Visting distant family is far simpler as well. Because of the means of transportation in the past, families seldom visited their distant family. We can quickly cover the distance with modern travel. However, our lives are busier than ever so it is hard to find the time to make those important family connections.

There are simple ways to stay connected with your extended family. With a little time and effort to begin with, you can make your family a top priority again. The following ideas can not only help you stay in touch with today's family, it can help make a personal record for your future posterity. We want to leave a good heritage for those who will wonder about us in the future.

Start a circle journal. If you have siblings or cousins that live far-off, start a circle journal within the group. Each person will get the journal for a week or so. Write down information about your family, things you have been doing and what your kids are involved in. After you have kept it for a short time, mail it to the next person on the list and they will do the same. Set up the time period so each person gets the journal about every six weeks. It is fun to read about everyone else when the journal returns to you, then it is time to start over again and write more. At the end of each year make a copy for everyone in the group and start with a fresh journal for the new year. This is a fun way to keep in touch with a group of families and it is more personal than a yearly update letter.

One of the greatthings about a circle journal is you are creating a record of your everyday life for your descendants. We tend to history the big events, but not our daily routine. If you research your family record you will find that you cherish the records of the mundane things of everyday. These are the events that make our ancestors real and help us to identify with them. It is important to develop that kind of record for your posterity.

Create a family blog. Blogs are a fast and easy way to stay connected and share life events. Your blog doesn't need to be open to the world, you can develop a private blog that is only available to those you invite. Blogging is a good way to share pictures, funny life tales, and major events with your family and friends.

Develop a digital scrapbook. Digital scrapbooking is an low-cost, mess free way to create a family history. When you create a scrapbook digitally, you can share your layouts with family and friends by posting them on your blog or picture sharing websites. If you want, you can have your scrapbook printed professionally and give it as a gift.

There are a lot of different ways to keep a record of your life. Just as accountsof ancestors are importantto us, someday your history will be invaluableto your posterity. A record of family helps us to remember where we have been and guides us to where we are going. Rememberto include all your family members in your record, even you!
